There is a saying in "University": The so-called honest people don't deceive themselves. If it stinks, if it's lewd, it's called modesty. Therefore, a gentleman must be cautious and independent. In other words, being honest with your own thoughts means not deceiving yourself. Just like hating bad smell and liking beautiful face, it is from the heart and instinct, so that you can say that you feel at ease. Therefore, people with high moral cultivation must be cautious when they are alone, and they must be the same in front of others. This is no different from the sincerity mentioned above.
? But as Xunzi said, human nature is evil, and people are born with solid villains. Their benevolence and morality are not innate, nor is Mingde's sincerity innate. Not to mention the purpose, it is not easy to be a noble-looking gentleman, let alone sincere charity from the heart.

To this end, first of all, we must "concentrate on the city", achieve the unity of knowledge and action, and warn ourselves that both predecessors and successors should conform to the character of a gentleman. A person without moral cultivation can do anything bad when he is alone. When they meet people with moral cultivation, they cover up their bad deeds and pretend to be their own virtues. As the university said, it is not good for a villain to do nothing. When you see a gentleman, you get bored, cover up his incompetence and focus on his kindness. After all, "what good is it for a person to see himself if he sees his lungs and liver?"
? After that, my ideological and moral level improved, and I gradually realized the importance of a gentleman's noble character. Gradually, I will be sincere and become a virtuous person. However, this is not necessarily the case. As I said before, human nature is evil. This "evil" does not mean doing actual bad things, but a heart may have bad ideas. This is inevitable. For example, if you accidentally hit a car parked on the side of the road, your first reaction may be to walk away quietly, but your moral conscience requires you to leave your contact information and provide compensation for the owner. After weighing the two, you finally choose the latter. Although this is the same as the result of the first reaction to provide compensation, it is also a heartfelt choice rather than being forced, but the former is only "one heart and one mind", which does not reach the sincerity of Mingde, nor can it be called a real Mingde person, so not everyone who looks like a gentleman is a real gentleman. But in this case, only you know the difference between the two, and others can't say it. However, it is not easy to achieve the former, and the latter is only a handful of sages and cannot be forced. Read more sages and be a gentleman.

Obviously, I don't agree with the statement that "sincerity is in the middle and appearance is outside" in "University", because it doesn't mean that what a person's heart is, his appearance must be what it is. In this example, even if you don't think it was done by a gentleman at first, it may be done by a gentleman in the end. However, I quite agree that "a gentleman must be cautious and independent". Whether from the heart or out of self-demand, we should be strict with ourselves and strive to be a gentleman.
? Why do I think the most important thing for Mingde is honesty? Because this is the foundation of virtue, only in this way can we further improve our self-cultivation, truly learn the character of sages, always remember benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trust and always do it, and be worthy of being a gentleman.
Mingde, the "university", may be so. As the saying goes, "Rich in house and virtuous in body, broad-minded and fat in body", moral cultivation can change temperament, and cultural cultivation can also change a person's mental outlook. With the study of "University", we will gradually change our attitude towards life and stop blindly pursuing others. Instead, we should take every day and everything seriously, have great wisdom, gain insight into the world in small places and learn from sages and gentlemen. And this is also the change that traditional culture learning will bring.
