The Music School of Shaanxi Normal University, formerly known as the Music Department of Shaanxi Normal University, was founded in 1987. 1998 Shaanxi normal university art college was established, with music department. In July 2005, Shaanxi Normal University Conservatory of Music was established.

Conservatory of Music is a large-scale college of Shaanxi Normal University, with complete professional categories, complete hardware facilities and strong teachers. The college consists of five departments and two centers: vocal music department, piano department, instrumental music department, music department, dance department, Han and Tang music and dance research center and performing arts center. There are three undergraduate majors in musicology, dance education and music performance, two master majors in musicology and art, and seven postgraduate majors. At present, the college has formed a multi-disciplinary and multi-level school-running pattern with both normal and non-normal majors.

The newly-built 14000 square meter music building of the Conservatory of Music has complete facilities, advanced functions and first-class conditions for running a school. At present, it has modern acousto-optic equipment, a concert hall that can accommodate more than 1000 people, 133 piano rooms, 1 piano, 12 professional dance classrooms with advanced equipment, 2 electric piano classrooms, 2 modern audio-visual rooms and 2 multimedia classrooms, 1 room. The college reference room has thousands of professional books, thousands of CDs, DVDs and other audio-visual materials, and more than 40 Chinese and English periodicals.

There are 59 professional teachers in the Conservatory of Music, including 22 professors and associate professors and 6 external professors. Professor Tian Dacheng, the current president, is a doctor of vocal music at Tokyo University of the Arts. Professor Qu Yun, a famous guzheng player, enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. Professor Cheng, a national first-class actor, has made great achievements in dance performance and teaching. The Conservatory of Music has always adhered to the principle of teacher-oriented, professors running the school and the dean being responsible, and has drawn lessons from foreign advanced experience in running schools. At the same time, a teaching committee and an academic committee were established, and experts and professors directly participated in the construction and development of the college. The college also has a huge national orchestra.

With the strong support of the school and after years of hard work, the Conservatory of Music has developed rapidly in personnel training, discipline construction, academic research and teaching facilities, creating a good environment and conditions for cultivating outstanding artistic talents. The College put forward the resounding slogan of "shaping the image of scholar-type artists", often organized academic exchanges, encouraged teachers to go abroad for further study, sponsored teachers and students to participate in academic activities at home and abroad, and rewarded those with outstanding scientific research achievements. In recent years, the teachers' professional awareness has become increasingly strong, the scientific research level has been continuously improved, and the artistic practice and scientific research achievements are gratifying. The college always adheres to the correct direction of running a school, pays attention to students' comprehensive quality and professional practical ability, actively encourages teachers and students to participate in art practice inside and outside the school, and actively organizes and guides students to participate in various performances and competitions at all levels. In recent years, teachers and students of the Conservatory of Music have won more than ten prizes in national professional competitions, including five national college students' basic skills competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education and six national college students' art festivals. Dance majors won silver prizes in the "Pushing New People" dance competition organized by CCTV. Teachers and students majoring in music and dance have won the first, second and third prizes for dozens of times in provincial and municipal professional competitions. In recent years, previous graduates have been widely recognized by the society and welcomed and praised by employers. The employment areas involve Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other large and medium-sized cities. In the past three years, the employment rate of undergraduates has been above 90%.
