It is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the capital of Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, the seat of Bortala Military Division and the political, economic and cultural center of the whole state.
