Author: [Hungary] Liszt

Introduction: Based on Berlioz's suggestion, after reading Goethe's poetic drama Faust, Liszt couldn't help but be amazed, and finally wrote the end of this symphony in the form of chorus in 1857. Premiered on February 5 of the same year, 65438.

The three movements of the whole song are like three large portraits, all of which are about the characters in the poetic drama Faust.

The first movement Faust, sonata form. Among them, five themes are used to express Faust's personality characteristics. The first theme, based on adding a triad, shows the image of Faust who wants to solve the mystery of the mysterious world. The second theme is presented by oboe, which shows Faust's love, passion and loneliness, and his yearning for grand and lofty things. The three themes that appeared after the music turned fast showed Faust's struggle, distress and heroism respectively.

2. The second movement "Margaret". Margaret, a citizen-born girl, is innocent and lovely. Faust fell in love with her after her rejuvenation, which led to tragedy. In this trilogy, the oboe expresses Margaret's innocent and kind image with a soft theme. Some themes of Faust in the previous movement also appeared here, in order to show the scene of their love. At the end, the atmosphere quieted down, and Faust was intoxicated in the artistic conception of happiness.

3. The third movement "Mefistofele Phyllis". This is the devil in the poetic drama Faust. He tried to buy Faust's soul with love, joy and strength, but in the end he failed. Fast music shows the image of Mefistofele Phyllis, who denies everything in a playful way. Here, only the second movement shows that Margaret's theme is still reproduced in its original appearance, and other themes have changed their appearance and become music full of drama and obvious humor. After the music rises step by step, it is strongly collected. In the chorus part, after the climax paragraph, the trombone is used to solemnly blow out the tone of the chorus theme, and then under the background of the continuous sound of the organ and the vibration of the strings, the male chorus sings the poem "Mysterious Chorus" in the second part of the poetic drama Faust. Then the tenor solo, Margaret theme appeared. Finally, the music from Faust's second theme starts from the bass area, rises step by step and ends.
