1966 After the Cultural Revolution began, the Red Guards and the rebels repeatedly ran to the Summer Palace under the slogan of "breaking capitalism" and threatened to "dig Wanshou Mountain and fill Kunming Lake".
However, Wanshou Mountain and Kunming Lake are very big, so it is not easy for the Red Guards and the rebels to really start work. Therefore, the Red Guards and the rebels fixed their eyes on the arcade outside the East Palace of the Summer Palace, trying to smash it.
Just as the Red Guards put up a ladder and boarded the archway, ready to pull it down, Premier Zhou Enlai learned the news. He immediately called the management office of the Summer Palace and asked them to stop the Red Guards, and sent his secretary to the scene to explain the truth to the leaders of the Red Guards.
He solemnly conveyed to them his opinion that "the archway of the Summer Palace must be protected and not allowed to be demolished". This archway was thus protected and still stands outside the East Palace of the Summer Palace.
After protecting the archway outside the East Palace of the Summer Palace, Zhou Enlai still felt uneasy and went to the Summer Palace himself. Walking to the promenade of the Summer Palace, Zhou Enlai stopped to admire the paintings on the promenade, but was recognized by some people, who immediately surrounded him.
