Food safety hidden trouble
April 7th is World Health Day. This year's theme is "food safety" and the slogan is "from farm to table, ensure food safety". According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, about 2 million deaths are related to eating unsafe food every year. In the past decade, serious outbreaks of food-borne diseases have been recorded on all continents, and the incidence rate in many countries is still rising.

Disease control experts said that in recent years, rural community population is a high-risk group of food poisoning. According to Mao Fei, a special commentator of China Rural Voice, non-point source pollution, fake and shoddy goods and three no foods are the three major sources that endanger rural food safety:

Mao Fei: First, the non-point source pollution of agricultural land is serious. At present, China is the country with the largest use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the world. Their usage per unit area far exceeds the world average. The popularization of new technology of plastic film mulching also makes the problem of residual pollution of plastic film more and more serious. In addition, in some areas, the introduction of polluting enterprises has caused pollution to local rivers, lakes, air and soil, resulting in excessive heavy metal content in agricultural products in these areas. Second, fake and inferior commodities such as "Kangshuaifu" and "Wa Chen Wenjing" flooded the rural market. Third, there are many small workshops in rural areas, and there are three kinds of food such as "spicy strips". Especially near the school, this small food without any certification and testing is threatening the safety of children.

The reason why China's rural areas have become the hardest hit areas of food safety incidents lies in the weak safety awareness of villagers and the lack of supervision.

Mao Fei: First, the overdraft of land fertility and the improvement of insect resistance in some areas have made farmers more and more dependent on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Secondly, residents in rural areas in China have weak awareness of food safety and weak ability to identify food safety, which is directly related to the low cultural quality of residents in rural areas and insufficient government propaganda. Third, the purchasing power of rural residents is weak. Fourth, farmers have a weak right to speak. The media also lacks attention to rural areas. Fifth, the GDP orientation makes the government lack the necessary review of some projects. Sixth, it is difficult for the government to effectively supervise food because of unreasonable institutional setup, outdated equipment, lack of personnel and imperfect supporting legal measures.

Based on the above reasons, how to improve the level of food safety supervision in rural areas of China. Mao Fei believes that the table safety in rural areas can be guaranteed by clarifying responsibilities, improving supervision and increasing the income of rural residents.

Mao Fei: First of all, clarify the regulatory responsibility of the government in food safety incidents. Secondly, explore a new government assessment mechanism. Third, efforts should be made to improve the income level of rural residents and encourage the media to pay more attention to food safety in rural areas. Furthermore, increase publicity, improve policies and regulations, institutional setup and staffing, and improve the level of supervision technology and equipment. Finally, support the development of agriculture through science and technology, and promote organic pesticides and fertilizers that can degrade heavy metals and pesticide residues.
