Kokdala is a county-level city directly under the jurisdiction of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. With the Fourth Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, the management system of integration of division and city is implemented and managed by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Keke is Kazakh, which means "green", and Dala is Mongolian, which means "Yuan Ye". "Kokdala" is a place name produced by the combination of Kazakh and Mongolian, which means "Green Yuan Ye".

Kokdala is located at the westernmost border of China, about 25 kilometers away from Ili Prefecture and about 700 kilometers away from Urumqi, the capital of the autonomous region. The city center is located at 44 7 ′ 34 ″ north latitude and 80 37 ′ 20 ″ east longitude. It is adjacent to Yining City, Yili Prefecture in the east, Horgos City in the west, Dulata Port in the south and Goguryeo Mountain on the northern slope of Tianshan Mountain in the north. The total area of Kokdala is 979.7 1 km2.

Kokdala belongs to the sub-humid continental temperate climate, which is mild and humid with large temperature difference between day and night. It's hot in summer, less hot in summer, and less cold in winter. The temperature rises rapidly but is unstable in spring, and drops rapidly in autumn. The annual average temperature is 8.9℃, the highest temperature is 39.5℃, and the lowest temperature is -35.2℃. Sunshine hours are 2700 ~ 2900 hours, accumulated temperature is 2900 ~ 3500℃, and frost period is 150 ~ 180 days.
