On February 22nd, 1949, teachers from Chongqing University, Central Institute of Technology, Women's Teachers College and Sichuan Education College held a joint meeting in Dali College, announcing a strike and demanding that the national government ensure that the faculty and staff can maintain a minimum living. The teachers' actions received a positive response from the students.
On March 1949 and 17, more than 4,000 teachers and students from eight universities including key universities, Chung Kung University and Sichuan Institute of Education held a massive petition demonstration, which pushed the struggle for food and clothing to a climax. That night, the parade gathered in a major playground and held a bonfire party called "Live Life". Tens of thousands of teachers and students gathered on the playground. Teachers and students shouted slogans in Chongqing dialect and poured out their heartfelt wishes of "fighting for freedom and food and clothing" with songs and dances. At the end of the party, teachers and students sang "Unity is Strength" and passed the decision to name the playground "Unity Square".
Since then, Unity Square has become a gathering place of revolution and struggle, and has undertaken the mission of pursuing truth and democracy.
