In 2002, Hou gave up his film career and ran for the 9th Taipei City Councillor (Zhongzheng Constituency) on behalf of the New Party. The campaign slogan is: "Be an upright China person and a clean and good MP! He was successfully elected at the end of that year and was re-elected as the 10th Taipei City Councillor in 2006.
