After the Xi Incident, why didn't Zhang Xueliang be executed, and where did he go later?
After the Xi Incident, China negotiated with the Kuomintang, among which Zhang Xueliang advocated letting Chiang Kai-shek go. Later, Zhang Xueliang accompanied Chiang Kai-shek and his wife to leave Xijiao Airport quietly by car. Zhang Xueliang wanted to save Chiang Kai-shek's face by accepting a humble apology, to declare to the whole country his selfless mind of mobilizing troops to remonstrate, and to realize the situation of national unity against Japan under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek. The reason why Zhang Xueliang was not executed may be related to his status at that time. Since then, he was placed under house arrest by Chiang Kai-shek in Song Ziwen House of Jiming Temple, which was closely guarded and was not allowed to meet outsiders. This house arrest lasted for 40 years.
