O2 is a listed mobile communication company headquartered in Britain, and its German branch signed a contract with BMW Sauber. It is worth noting that O2 has just been acquired by Spanish telecom giant Telefonica for $310.3 billion, making it the fifth largest telecom operator in the world. By acquiring O2, Telefonica can regain the right to operate in Germany after leaving the German market in 2002, and Telefonica will gain 25 million new users. Only after the European Union acknowledged the success of the acquisition did BMW announce its cooperation with O2.
More notably, Telefó nica is currently one of the main sponsors of Renault F/KLOC-0 and world champion fernando alonso. Telefó nica's cooperation with BMW through its O2 is very suggestive for the future of Renault's F 1.
