In the Bauhaus Declaration, Gropes actually put forward two goals of the school: one is to break the boundaries of art types; The second is to raise the status of craftsmen to the level of artists. Although the manifesto reflected the continuation of Ruskin and Morris' thoughts and the background that the education system originated from the handicraft guild, Gropes later hinted that many elements in the manifesto were actually a kind of smoke screen, because the whole school-building plan was carried out under extremely unfavorable circumstances at that time.
Under the goal of the manifesto, the center of Gropes' teaching system reform is to make students' visual sensitivity reach a rational level through artistic training based on handicraft methods, that is, to have a scientific and technical understanding of materials, structure, texture and color, not just the artist's personal views. His ideal design education mode should attach importance to the combination of cultivating people's technical foundation, logical working methods and artistic creation.
