Today, I stand here, humbled by the task before me, grateful for your trust, and mindful of the great sacrifices made by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his contribution to this country, and I also thank him for his generosity and cooperation throughout the transition period.
So far, 44 Americans have been sworn in as president. These vows have appeared in the rising trend of prosperity, peace and calm, and of course they often appear in dark clouds and storms. At all these moments, the United States has been advancing, not only because of its ruling skills or foresight, but also because our people have always adhered to the ideals of our ancestors and faithfully fulfilled our founding declaration. This used to be the case, and this generation of Americans will continue to do so.
As we all know, we are currently in a crisis. Our country is declaring war on violence and hatred. Our economy has also been severely weakened, which is the result of greed and irresponsibility of some people, but we made collective mistakes in making difficult choices and preparing for the new era. The house was lost; Lost his job; Business is sluggish; Our medical care costs are high; Too many of our schools are unqualified; Every day, we can find more evidence that the way we use energy makes our opponents stronger and threatens our whole planet.
These data and statistics are the characteristics of this crisis. Although it can't be measured, the far-reaching impact is that our confidence has been eroded-fearing that the recession in the United States is inevitable and that the next generation will lower their expectations. What I want to tell you today is that the challenges we face are real. These challenges are numerous and serious, and will not be solved easily or in a short time. But we must also realize that the United States will eventually solve these difficulties.
Today, we are gathered here because I choose to overcome fear with hope and overcome conflicts and differences with unity. Today, we are here to end our sadness and false promises and give up the accusations and dogmatism that stifle our politics. We are still a young country, but now it is time to abandon childish behavior and reaffirm our immortal spirit; Choose our better history; Carry forward those precious and noble ideas and pass them on from generation to generation. God believes that all beings in the world are equal and free and should have the opportunity to pursue happiness.
When reaffirming the greatness of our country, we must understand that greatness will never be a gift, but we must strive for it. Our journey has never been short-cut, and it does not belong to those who are timid, tired of working or just pursuing wealth and fame. For us, they packed up a few things and began to cross the ocean to find a new life; For us, they worked hard in sweatshops, endured whipping and reclaimed hard land; For us, they fought and gave their lives in Concord, Gettysburg, Normandy and other places.
These men and women kept fighting and sacrificing, working until their hands were hurt, just to live a better life. In their eyes, the United States is more important than their personal responsibility, more important than all differences in origin, wealth or Sect. This is a journey that we are still continuing today. We are still the most prosperous and powerful country in the world. When the crisis began, the productivity of our workers did not decline; Our thoughts have not lost their creativity; The goods and services we need now are no less than last week, last month or last year; Our productivity has not declined. Starting today, we must pull ourselves together, dust ourselves off and begin to revitalize America again.
Look around, there is work to be done everywhere. The current economic situation requires us to take bold and swift action, and we will take action not only to create new employment opportunities, but also to lay a new foundation for economic growth. We will build roads and bridges, power grids and digital networks, which will serve our business activities and connect us. We will let science return to its original position and use science and technology to improve medical quality and reduce medical costs. We will use solar energy, wind energy and tidal energy to drive our cars and run our factories. We will reform our schools, colleges and universities to meet the needs of the new era. These are all things we can do, and we will do it well.
Now, some people question our ambition. They say that our system can't tolerate too many grand plans, and they forget because they have forgotten what this country has done and what free men and women can achieve when imagination and * * * are combined with goals, necessity and courage.
What cynics fail to understand is that the land under their feet has changed, and the stale political arguments that used to consume us for too long will not appear again. The question we are going to ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it is effective-whether it can help families find jobs that can pay decent wages, provide them with affordable medical services and provide a dignified retirement. When the answer is yes, we will promote this project. When the answer is confirmed, we will end the project. All of us who manage public funds will work under this standard-spend money wisely, reform bad habits and make our activities transparent, because only in this way can we restore the vital trust between the people and their governments.
For us, the quality of the market is not a problem. The ability of the market to create wealth and expand freedom is unparalleled. But this crisis reminds us that without effective supervision, the market will get out of control. When a country favors only the rich, its prosperity will not last long. The success of our economy depends not only on the gross national product, but also on the scope of our prosperity, and on our expanding opportunities to everyone who is willing to seize them, not only out of charity, but also because it is the most accurate way to realize our common interests.
As far as our common defense is concerned, we refuse to make a wrong choice between our security and our ideals. Our founding fathers face dangers we can't imagine. They drafted a charter to ensure the rule of law and human rights, which was expanded with the blood of generations of Americans. These ideals still illuminate the world, and we will not give them up for expediency. For all the people and governments in other parts of the world who are watching the inauguration ceremony today, from the magnificent capital to the small village where my father was born, please understand that the United States is a friend of all countries and all men, women and children who are striving for peace and dignity, and we are ready to become leaders again.
We recall previous generations of Americans who defeated fascism not only by missiles and tanks, but also by close alliances and lasting beliefs. They understand that our own strength is not enough to protect us and will not let us do whatever we want. On the contrary, they know that our strength will only increase if we use it carefully, and our security comes from the justice of our cause, the strength of our example, humanity and restraint.
We are the inheritors of this legacy. These principles will once again guide us to deal with new threats that require more efforts, and these new threats require countries to strengthen cooperation and understanding. We will responsibly hand over Iraq to the Iraqi people, and we will promote peace in Afghanistan, which is hard-won. We will make unremitting efforts with old friends and former rivals to weaken the nuclear threat and deal with global warming. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we relax our defenses. For those who promote their way of life by murdering innocent people, we want to tell you that our spirit is stronger and it is invincible. You can't destroy us, we will defeat you.
We all know that the collection of our various heritages is a strength, not a fragility. The United States is a country composed of people who believe in Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism and those who don't, where languages and cultures from all corners of the globe blend together. We have experienced the bitter experience of civil war and apartheid and turned a dark page, so we have become stronger and more United. Therefore, we firmly believe that the old enmity will be resolved one day, and the barriers between tribes will be eliminated soon. We firmly believe that as the world becomes smaller and smaller, our humanistic spirit will shine, and the United States must do its part to create a new era of peace.
For the Muslim world, we will seek a new way of mutual communication, a way based on common interests and mutual respect. For those leaders in the world who sow the seeds of conflict or blame their social ills on the West, you should understand that your people will judge you according to what you build, not what you destroy. For those leaders who seize power through corruption, deception and suppression of dissidents, you should understand that you are moving against the historical trend, but if you are willing to loosen your fist, we will help you.
For the people in those poor countries, we pledge to fight side by side with you, so that your farms will prosper, clean water will continue to flow, hungry bodies will be nourished, and hungry hearts will be nourished. For those countries that are relatively rich like us, we want to say that we can no longer be indifferent to the suffering outside our own borders, and we can no longer consume the resources of the world unscrupulously. The world has changed, and we must change with it.
When we look forward to the future, we think with humble gratitude of the brave Americans who are guarding the distant deserts and mountains at this moment. Today they have something to say to us, just like the whispers of fallen heroes lying in Arlington National Cemetery. We respect them, not only because they protect our freedom, but also because they practice the spirit of service and lofty will to find meaning in something greater than themselves. However, at this moment, this moment that will affect a generation is exactly the spirit we all need.
Because no matter what the government can and must do, in the end, this country depends on the faith and determination of the American people. It is kind to take in a stranger when the dam breaks. It is the selflessness that workers would rather reduce their working hours than see a friend lose his job and help us through the dark times. Rushing into the smoke-filled stairs is the courage of firefighters and the will of parents who raise their children and ultimately decide our fate.
We may face brand-new challenges, and our means to deal with these challenges may be brand-new, but the values on which our success depends are ancient-diligence, honesty, courage, justice, patience, curiosity, loyalty and patriotism. These things are true, and they have always been the driving force for our progress in American history. What is urgently needed now is to return to these truths. Now we need to enter a new era of responsibility-we need every American to realize that we are responsible for ourselves, this country and the whole world, not reluctantly accepting it, but doing our part. It should be thoroughly understood that unless we put everything into an arduous task, our spirit cannot be satisfied and our personality cannot be shaped.
This is the value and commitment of being a citizen.
This is the source of our confidence, and God calls us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our freedom and faith-why men, women and children of different faiths and races can gather in this magnificent hall, and why a man's father could not eat in a local restaurant less than 60 years ago, but now he can stand in front of everyone and take the most solemn oath.
Let's commemorate this day with the memory of who we are and the journey we have traveled. In the year when the United States was born, in the coldest season, a small group of patriots gathered around the dying bonfire by the river, which was already frozen. The capital was abandoned. The enemy is advancing. The snow was covered with blood. At the moment when the success or failure of the revolution is uncertain, our founding father let the people hear the following sentence:
"Let the future world know this ... in the cold winter of ice and snow, when only hope and virtue survive ... this city and this country will stand up after the danger alarm sounds."
America. Now we are facing the danger of * * *, in this difficult winter, let us remember these immortal words. With hope and virtue, let's meet the cold turbulence again and endure the possible storm. Let our children and grandchildren tell us that when we are faced with a test, we refuse to stop this journey. We didn't turn around or waver, but our eyes were firmly fixed on the front. Thanks to God's grace, we take this great gift of freedom and safely pass it on to our descendants.
