Before 1949, this system existed intermittently. 1945 after War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, prostitution and whoring activities spread widely. After the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC), the people's government banned the prostitution system by closing brothels, punishing prostitutes and reforming prostitutes. By 1957, prostitution and whoring activities were basically banned. However, since the late 1970s, due to the comprehensive influence of various factors, prostitution and whoring activities have reappeared in China, especially in open cities and coastal areas, and severe measures have been taken to deal with them.
