Detailed explanation of Toyota 10 speed CVT gearbox
Toyota's ten-speed CVT gearbox is actually a combination of what we call E-CVT gearbox and 4AT gearbox, which consists of ten gears.
Let's talk about this E-CVT gearbox first. This E-CVT gearbox has nothing to do with CVT gearbox. You can't even find any steel belt transmission structure related to the traditional CVT gearbox in this gearbox. On the contrary, you can see more planetary gear transmission systems similar to AT gearboxes in E-CVT. It is not so much a gearbox as a transmission system with a very complicated structure, which is usually used in Toyota's hybrid cars.
In this ten-speed CVT gearbox, the E-CVT gearbox provides three fixed transmission ratios, which are combined with the first three gears of Toyota 4AT gearbox to form 1 to 9 gears, and the top gear of 4AT matches the top gear of E-CVT to form the tenth gear. Therefore, Toyota 10 speed CVT can be regarded as a hybrid product of 4AT and E-CVT.
The advantage of this is to make the gearbox smaller and lighter, which is said to be comparable to the 8AT gearbox. At the same time, the blessing of hybrid technology makes the whole more fuel-efficient. The engine of 1.2T also exploded with enough torque to drive the vehicle.
