What does it mean to lose your family?
"Compensating the in-laws' family" is a traditional custom in the southern dialect, which mainly means that when getting married, the man should give the bride a bride price, which is higher than the bride's "worth", thus indicating that the man attaches importance to the bride and the family has strong financial resources. "Losing one's maiden" means that the bride price of the man is lower than the woman's "worth", which is considered as a "shame" because the man's family can't afford a high enough bride price and is considered to be married at a loss. Although this tradition can no longer fully represent the concept of modern society, it still has a great influence on people in some families and regions.
