What is the origin of Singapore's name?
Singapore was called Sima Xi in ancient times, also known as Xipo, Xipo or Shikai. It was renamed from Malaysia to Singapore in about 1 160. The word "Singapore" means "lion" and "slope" means "island" in Malay.

According to the Malay Chronicle, it is said that Sri Tilipana, the prince of Sri Lanka's Death Kingdom, once found a white beach while hunting in Singapore and walked over. Suddenly, a beast with black head, red chest and white hair galloped past. The prince asked the follower what monster it was, and the follower casually called it a lion. The prince thought it was an auspicious place and decided to establish a country here. Later, the prince built a city here and named it "Sinhalese", which means "lion" in Sanskrit and "Singapore" in Malay, which means lion city.
