Xu Shou, a native of Xue Cun, was born in 18 18, a native of Wuxi Qianqiao Society, and an expert in chemistry and machinery. In his youth, he witnessed the corruption and incompetence of the imperial court, that is, he abandoned the imperial examination and studied natural science and western learning. After more than 20 years of hard study, he has mastered many subjects such as chemistry, physics, machinery and mathematics. Since 1868, he has been in charge of Shanghai Translation Museum and participated in translation work 17 years. * * * Books on western science and technology 17 have been published, including books 105, 168 and 9 monographs. Many of them are chemical works, which systematically introduce modern western chemical knowledge and name chemical elements with newly created Chinese characters for the first time. 1873 Xu shou was appointed as the director of Jiangnan manufacturing bureau. From 65438 to 0874, Gezhi Academy was founded in Shanghai and John Flair, England, and began to demonstrate chemical experiments, thus creating a group of scientific and technological talents. At the same time, the publication Gezhi Compilation was founded, which played a pioneering role in spreading scientific and technological knowledge and promoting the development of modern chemistry in China. Xu Shou died of overwork on 1884. His translated works handed down from generation to generation include Chemical Review, Chemical Quality Inspection, Introduction of Western Learning to the East, Calculation of Chemistry, Forensic Medicine and so on.
