Eaton's students are all boys between the ages of 13 and 18, and they attach great importance to sports, and even formulated such a slogan: "Sports first, learning second". Paying so much attention to sports may be a feature of "boys' schools", but the more fundamental reason is that they think that "the essence of sports is personality education"
They attach great importance to team sports and competitions, and think that the qualities that students need to cultivate can be perfectly exercised in team sports, such as independence, communication, cooperation, persistence, leadership, fair competition, rules ... and so on. These are all necessary qualities for a person to achieve his career and a happy life. So, how is physical education class set up? They call physical education class a "game", and this is their physical education class list:
Football-Football, Rugby-Rugby, Squash-Squash, Field-Field, Rowing-Rowing, Cricket-Cricket, Tennessee-Tennis, Fives- Eaton Five, Squash-Golf, Indoor events such as hockey, swimming, gymnastics-fencing, shooting, badminton, martial arts and basketball.
Some of these lessons sound strange to us, but many of them are also convenient for our children to attend, such as football, track and field, tennis, swimming, badminton, martial arts, basketball and so on. Taekwondo, which is popular here, is not included. In Eaton, students have to take about 8 compulsory courses in physical education class and 27 elective courses in physical education class.
This is the basic arrangement of compulsory and elective courses of physical education in a school year. There are three semesters in a year. Every semester, physical education class consists of some major events (football, rugby, hockey, rowing, field football, track and field, cricket and tennis) and some minor events.
In winter, rugby and football are the main events, while in summer, cricket and boating are the special events. Students who take part in cricket competitions spend five to six hours training almost every day, while members of the school team usually spend two days a week participating in various off-campus competitions. Physical education class is about 20 hours a week here, and culture class is about 30 hours a week. So, I exercise almost half a day.
