Family planning is a process of controlling population in a planned way through late marriage, late childbirth, good birth and fewer births. This is one of the basic national policies of China. Since the implementation of family planning in China, it has played an active role in population control and economic development. At present, because the first batch of only children born in the 1980s have reached marriageable age, the family planning policy has been relaxed, such as having a second child alone.
The Law of the People's Republic of China on Population and Family Planning (adopted at the 25th meeting of the Ninth NPC Standing Committee on February 29th, 2000/KLOC-0) came into effect on September 20th, 2002.
