In July 1965, Wang Jie went to Zhanglou Commune, Pi County, Jiangsu Province to help the militia mine squad conduct mine laying and blasting training. On the morning of July 14, when Wang Jie was organizing the militiamen to conduct live explosion training, at the critical moment when the explosive package was about to explode unexpectedly, in order to protect the 12 militiamen and people's armed cadres present, he was not afraid of the danger and resolutely pounced on the explosive package, heroically Sacrifice, giving up his life at the age of only 23 years.

Commemoration for future generations

In November 1965, the Ministry of National Defense named Wang Jie’s class as “Wang Jie Class”. Party and state leaders Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu, Lu Dingyi, Xu Guangda and others personally wrote inscriptions.

The "Wang Jie Class" of a brigade of the Army's 71st Group Army has always inherited and carried forward the "Wang Jie Spirit." Since the transformation, every soldier of the "Wang Jie Class" has mastered 11 types of strike firearms proficiently, and is the first in the brigade to obtain professional grade certificates in communications, shooting, and driving.
