Extended information
The Eight Immortals are the eight Taoist gods widely circulated in Chinese folklore. Before the Ming Dynasty, there were different versions of the name of the Eight Immortals. There were the Eight Immortals of the Han Dynasty, the Eight Immortals of the Tang Dynasty, and the Eight Immortals of the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The immortals listed were all different.
By the Ming Dynasty, Wu Yuantai's "Journey to the East" was originally defined as: Tieguai Li (Li Xuan), Han Zhongli (Zhongli Quan), Zhang Guolao (Zhang Guolao), Lu Dongbin (Lv Yan), He Xiangu ( He Qiong), Lan Caihe (Xu Jian), Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu (Cao Jingxiu).
Introduction to the Eight Immortals
1. Tieguai Li. In folklore, he is the first of the Eight Immortals. Some books say that his surname is Li and his given name is Flood. He is from Xiaxia in the Sui Dynasty. Mr. Lu Xun's "A Brief History of Chinese Novels" says that his surname is Li and his given name is Xuan; Zhao Yi's "Bi Yu Cong Kao" "It is also said that his surname is Liu. It is said that he was born between Kaiyuan and Daizong Dali of Tang Dynasty. He studied Taoism in Zhongnan Mountain. Once his soul came out of his shell, he never thought that his body would be eaten by tigers, so he had to devote himself to being a lame beggar.
2. Zhongli Quan. His reputation is second only to Tieguai Li. He has a higher status among the Eight Immortals, especially due to the praise of Taoists, and his reputation is even greater. During the Yuan Dynasty, Jin Zhendao was regarded as the "Zhengyang Patriarch". The prototype of his character appeared around the time of the Five Dynasties and the early Song Dynasty. "Xuanhe Chronicle", "Yi Jian Zhi", "Song History" and other books all have records of his deeds. It was only later that he was mistakenly identified as Zhongli of the Han Dynasty, and he was attached to the Han Dynasty.
3. Zhang Guolao. He is an elderly immortal among the Eight Immortals, named "Zhang Guo". Because he is the oldest among the Eight Immortals, people respectfully call him "Zhang Guolao". "Guoji" records that he was "a native of Guangzong, Xingzhou" (a native of Zhangguzhai Village, Guangzong County, Hebei Province today).
4. Lu Dongbin. In Taoism, Quanzhen Taoism regards him as "Chun Yang Patriarch", also known as "Lu Zu". Lu Dongbin was born in Hezhongfu, Puzhou (now Yongle Town, Ruicheng, Shanxi). His original name was Lu Yan ("Yan" or "Yan"), with the courtesy name Dongbin and the character Xing. His Taoist name was Chunyangzi and his nickname was Hui Taoist. Lu Dongbin is the founder of Quanzhen Taoism, the mainstream of Taoism in the world. He is a famous immortal in Chinese legend and one of the Eight Immortals of Taoism.
5. He Xiangu. She is the only female among the Eight Immortals, and there are different opinions about her life experience. One said she was from the Tang Dynasty. "Taiping Guangji" in the early Song Dynasty quoted "Guangyi Ji" as "He Erniang", a peasant woman who made shoes for her business. Later, because she felt that her home was too boring, she traveled to Luofu Mountain and stayed in a mountain temple. He often collects mountain fruits to feed the monks in the temple.
6. Lan Caihe. Among the Eight Immortals, there is a cynical, seemingly crazy, begging Taoist Immortal. His deeds are recorded in books such as Shen Fen's "Xuxian Zhuan" in the Southern Tang Dynasty, "Taiping Guangji" in the early Song Dynasty, and Lu You's "Book of the Southern Tang Dynasty". He was from the late Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties. His behavior is eccentric, he likes to drink and sing, and he usually wears a ragged blue shirt, a boot on one foot, and a bare foot on the other.
7. Han Xiangzi. Xiangzi of Han Dynasty in the Tang Dynasty, whose courtesy name was Qingfu, was one of the Eight Immortals in ancient Chinese folklore. He was good at playing the flute and studied Taoism under Lu Dongbin. The Taoist music "Tianhua Yin" is said to have been composed by Han Xiangzi.
8. Uncle Cao Guo. Cao Guojiu, who ranks at the bottom of the Eight Immortals, appeared the latest and has fewer fairy tales spread. The stories about her life experience are similar, and they are all related to Empress Cao of Song Renzong.
According to "History of the Song Dynasty", Cao Yi, courtesy name Gongbo, was the grandson of Cao Bin and the younger brother of Empress Cao. He had an easy temperament, was proficient in music, and loved to compose poems. He was granted the title of Prince of Jiyang County. He went through several dynasties smoothly and died at the age of seventy-two.
