Inaugural address (196 1)
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been entrusted with the responsibility of defending freedom at the moment when freedom is facing the greatest danger. I won't shirk this responsibility-I'm willing to take it. I don't believe that any of us will exchange places with anyone else or any other generation. Our energy, faith and dedication to this endeavor will illuminate our country and all those who serve it-the light from this fire will really illuminate the world.
So, my fellow Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what we can do together for the freedom of mankind.
