Lü Buwei did not give his life a satisfactory ending in his later years.
In view of his special relationship with Ying Zheng, Lu Buwei was only removed from his position as prime minister after quelling the Lao Ai rebellion. However, the abnormal family life that Ying Zheng has experienced since childhood left him with too much physical and mental pain. He witnessed his mother's dissolute and disorderly life with his own eyes. Even when he was a young man of seventeen or eighteen years old, Lu Buwei blatantly went into the harem to hang out with his mother, especially Lao Ai, who was simply an animal. Lao Ai has been suppressed, and Ying Zheng is no longer worried, but Lu Buwei is still in Xianyang. If he re-enters the harem one day and rekindles his old relationship with the Queen Mother, won't he get into trouble again?
Ying Zheng is a politician after all. He considered the issue from the perspective of Qin's stability and Qin's development, and made another decision to let Lu Buwei leave Xianyang, go to the fiefdom of Luoyang, and move to Henan. It should be said that Ying Zheng's decision still gave Lu Buwei enough face. When you go to Luoyang, you can pay the taxes of 100,000 households, but you are still the Marquis of Wenxin, still enjoying the glory and wealth, and you are far away from the political center, and you are still safe and clean. From this point of view, Ying Zheng had good intentions and arranged a place for Lu Buwei to spend his old age, which can be regarded as the best solution to their special relationship.
However, Lu Buwei did not do this. He thought that he could accumulate strength and develop his influence in Luoyang, and maybe he could do something, or even make a comeback!
After coming to Luoyang, Lu Buwei became active again. He made many friends. There were banquets at home all day long, and the house was full of distinguished guests. There was an endless stream of envoys and guests from various countries who came to visit. "Historical Records: Biography of Lu Buwei" records: At the end of the year, guests and envoys from the princes looked at each other on the road and invited Marquis Wenxin.
Lü Buwei’s activities in Luoyang soon spread to Ying Zheng, who had a very sensitive political sense. Ying Zheng has just taken charge and needs stability. Unexpectedly, Lu Buwei will not accept the lesson and cannot bear the loneliness. This is really intolerable! Ying Zheng finally felt that he had to take the last move against Lu Buwei.
In the twelfth year of the Qin Dynasty (235 BC), he sent a letter to Lu Buwei. Lu Buwei opened it and saw that it read:
What is your contribution to the king? Yu Qin? Qin Fengjun 100,000 households in Henan? Why are you so close to Qin? Known as Zhongfu! Moved to Shu with his family! This letter is Ying Zheng’s complete denial of Lu Buwei’s political status and family relationship:
First, you, Lu Buwei, have done nothing for the Qin State and should not enjoy taxation, food and land;
Second Second, you, Lu Buwei, are not related to me, so you should not be called Zhongfu. A person who has no merit and is not related to me has anything to do with me. Get away from here as soon as possible!
Normally, when a monarch executes a minister who has fallen out of power, there is no need to say so many words, but Ying Zheng insisted on giving an explanation to Lu Buwei. But this statement reveals the secret. The so-called "no merit" and "no relatives" is pure truth. Faced with such a heartless letter, Lu Buwei was speechless. He regretted his mistakes and lamented his bad fate, but it was too late. Soon he committed suicide by drinking poisoned wine.
As for Lu Buwei's death, there is another theory that he committed suicide by taking poison on the way to Shu. Sima Qian said in "Tai Shi Gong's Preface" that Wei Wei moved to Shu, which was recorded in "Lü Lan". Many people in the academic world believe that Lu Buwei committed suicide after learning that he had moved to Shu, without ever arriving in Shu.
From Lu Buwei's abandonment of business and politics, his remarkable achievements, to his repeated mistakes and tragic ending, it can be seen that he always handled affairs with the speculative mentality of a businessman and the value of profit. His strategy and activity energy are all top-notch, and he is worthy of the title of Prime Minister. However, he is not so smart in dealing with personal issues. He is too selfish, taking advantage of advantages and taking advantage. Finally, Ying Zheng changed The view of him was changed, and political relations replaced emotional relations. Lu Buwei was in ruins in his later years and his reputation was ruined, leaving deep thoughts for future generations.
