Chang Xiangyu studied opera with her father Zhang Fuxian since she was a child. At the age of 9, she went to join the Taiyi Xin Troupe in Mi County. She also worshiped Zhai Yanshen and Zhou Haihai as her teachers and learned Western tunes from Henan. He started out as a minor student and a minor student, and later specialized in Danjiao. He started performing on stage at the age of 10, and became famous in Kaifeng for performing a new adaptation of "The West Chamber" at the age of 13. She is diligent and studious in art and has the courage to innovate. She has extensively absorbed the strengths of Peking Opera, Ping Opera, Qinqiang Opera, Henan Opera, pendants, drums and other arts to enrich her singing and performances. Dongdiao, Xiangfu Diao, Shahe Diao, etc. were integrated into Henan Western Diao, creating unique new tunes and becoming a major genre in Henan opera. Her singing is passionate and unrestrained, with both strength and softness, and she expresses herself freely; her performance is strong, fresh, graceful and generous. Representative repertoires include "Hong Kong", "The Legend of White Snake", "Mulan", "Battle of Hongzhou", "The Great Sacrifice Stake" and modern dramas "Human Joy" and "The Story of the Red Lantern", etc., with a wide range of operas.
In 1948, Xiangyu Drama School was founded in Xi'an. It combined teaching and performance and trained many actors. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was changed to Xiangyu Drama Club. In 1951, in order to support the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, he led the theater company to perform charity performances in northwest, central and southern China, and donated all the proceeds to the "Xiangyu Theater Company" fighter jets. He was hailed as a "patriotic artist". He was elected as a representative of the first, second, third and fifth National People's Congress. In 1952, he attended the World People's Peace Conference in Vienna. In the same year, he participated in the First National Opera Observation and Performance Conference and won an honorary award. In 1956, Henan Yu Theater was established and he served as director. Joined the Communist Party of China in 1959. In 1979, he was elected as the vice chairman of the Chinese Dramatists Association and served as the principal of the Henan Opera School. Her famous saying is that the drama is bigger than the sky. On July 27, 2004, the State Council posthumously awarded the late Henan opera master Chang Xiangyu the honorary title of "People's Artist".
