Zuo Quan, formerly known as Zuo Jiquan, his childhood name Zi Lin and his nickname Shuren, was born in Liling County, Hunan in 1905. He lost his father when he was young and came from a poor family. He went to a private school at the age of 8 and was able to write poems and essays at the age of 10. At the age of 14, he transferred to Beilian High School and ranked among the best in his grades. When Yuan Shikai signed the "Twenty-One Articles" that forfeited power and humiliated the country, he carried the slogan "Don't forget the national humiliation of May 7th" and denounced his treason crimes in the village. After being promoted to Liling Middle School, he joined the Social Science Research Society under the introduction of Song Shilun. Influenced by the May 4th Movement, he was determined to go out and pursue progress.
