Be a human being first, then write. This is a famous saying from ancient people about learning calligraphy. Just as Lu You said, when learning poetry, the effort lies in poetry. In the same way, if you want to learn calligraphy well, you must also put in more effort in addition to calligraphy. We understand this sentence from two aspects.
First, scholars are required to have certain moral sentiments. Books are like people, and calligraphy can best reflect a person's personality and temperament. For example, "Shujue" says that Li Bai's calligraphy is majestic and beautiful, with an air of immortality. "Xuanhe Calligraphy" says that Du Mu's calligraphy is vigorous and vigorous, which is comparable to his writings. Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy is dignified and majestic, giving people a "noble" and "heroic" beauty. Later generations recognized that this is inseparable from Yan Zhenqing's lifelong loyalty. So is Su Shi? His articles are wonderful and his loyalty lasts to the sun and the moon. ?
Therefore, the ancients placed great emphasis on the cultivation of calligraphers when discussing calligraphy. For example, Liu Gongquan once said: "A right heart makes a right pen." Huang Tingjian said, "Studying books requires having moral principles in mind, and based on the study of sages and philosophers, books are valuable." If there is no progress in his spiritual life, even if his writing is not less original and less elegant, it will only be heard by ordinary people. ?Today, we calligraphers should also improve their moral and sentimental cultivation in all aspects, so that our calligraphy can also have a better temperament.
Second, scholars are required to widely absorb artistic nutrients. The essence of the beauty of calligraphy is to express various thoughts and interests through line processing, so that people can enjoy beauty. Therefore, calligraphers are good at observing life, and are good at capturing and refining beautiful phenomena and tastes from life (including various phenomena in nature and society and works of other artistic styles), and integrating them into their own calligraphy art to achieve success. Zhong Yao said goodbye to all things, all of them are written as images. It is said that Zhang Xu improved his calligraphy skills after seeing Mrs. Gongsun dancing with swords and fighting for the throne. Han Yu called him "The changes in heaven and earth, both gratifying and shocking, are all reflected in books." ?There are also Huaisu who watched the many strange peaks in Xia Yun and heard the waves of the river at night, which inspired the art of calligraphy and so on.
This all tells us that we must love life, observe life, and refine life in order to learn calligraphy well.
At the same time, being multi-talented, possessing various knowledge of painting, sculpture, music, literature and even a certain degree of accomplishment will also be of great benefit to the improvement of the level of calligraphy art.
