Text Interpretation

As for the awe-inspiring Qi, Mencius said: "It is Qi, which is the most powerful and strong. It can be cultivated without any directness." If it is harmed, it will be blocked between heaven and earth." This means that the aura of awe-inspiring is extremely vast and powerful. If it can be properly cultivated, it can fill the gap between heaven and earth. Cultivating awe-inspiring spirit is to establish a courageous and fearless spirit of awe-inspiring righteousness.

Haoran’s spirit is a kind of great courage. It is not reckless, ignorant or unprincipled, nor is it bent on winning without asking about right and wrong. It is an awe-inspiring and upright spirit that is resolute and courageous, and is not afraid of danger. In the eyes of Mencius, those who can achieve this kind of bravery are the real men. Jing Chun once asked Mencius: Aren't politicians like Gongsun Yan and Zhang Yi really men? When they lose their temper, even the princes are afraid; when they calm down, the world will be peaceful.

Mencius believed that a real man should follow the right path in the world, but these politicians would do anything and have no bottom line. How could they be a real man? Then, Mencius put forward his own standards for a true man: "To live widely in the world, to establish the right position in the world, to follow the great road of the world; to follow the will and the people, to follow the road alone if not; to be rich and noble, not to be lascivious, to be poor and lowly, not to be moved, to be powerful Unyielding: This is called a true man."

He believes that a true man should be benevolent, practice etiquette and justice, and aim for the world. When you are successful, you should follow the morality of benevolence and righteousness together with the people; when you are unsuccessful, you should practice your own ideas alone, and be able to not change your pursuits and beliefs due to wealth, poverty, or power. Later, these words became a famous saying for those who are determined to discipline themselves.
