There is a pen in a calligrapher’s character, just like there is an eye in a Zen scholar’s ??sentence. Studying books leads to knowledge, and knowing knowledge can lead to a long way. The mysterious meaning emerges from the surface of things; the profound truth lies in the darkness; it cannot be expressed by ordinary emotions, nor can it be measured by the wisdom of the world. It may be used to convey the ambition to achieve great success, or it may be used to relieve depression. Although it is noble, it cannot suppress its height, and although it is a clever calculation, it cannot measure its power. The person who writes old books is also a student of the mind; the person who writes the characters is also a writer of aspirations. One point becomes one word, and one word is the final word. Correct calligraphy rectifies people's hearts, and it also rectifies the holy way. The mind that sees the world, the emotion that recommends the saints, the doubts and arguments, and the reasoning between the vulgar and the Confucian. Those who study calligraphy have two views: one is to view things and the other is to view myself. Observe things to resemble emotions, observe me to understand virtue. Academic scriptures and commentaries all originate from the heart. If the heart is not right, everything will be wrong. Liu Gongquan said: If the heart is right, the pen will be right. Mortals have different qi, blood, muscles and bones. The heart is dense and dense, and the hand is clumsy. The beauty and ugliness of writing lie in the heart and hand.
