An interesting talk about Dongshan place names

I watched the play "Gu Wenchang" before, and there was a plot mentioned in it. In order to solve the drinking water problem in Dongshan, Gu Wenchang invited experts to explore underground water sources. But I searched many places but could not find any underground water source. One night, Gu Wenchang looked at the map of Dongshan under the kerosene lamp as usual. Suddenly he paused for a long time on the place name "Lake End". Why is it called "Lake Tail"? There are no lakes around Huwei Village. Could there have been a lake before? Otherwise, why is it called "Lake Tail"? Later, Secretary Gu found an old man who was familiar with local anecdotes. The old man said that the terrain of Huwei Village was low, so it was said that the ancestors of Huwei Village had founded Jili Village next to a blue wave. So Secretary Gu called experts to explore, and finally found the underground water source in Huwei Village, and dug wells and built canals to promote water conservancy. This shows that it is still very important to be familiar with place names.

1. Dongshan and the origin of its nickname

Dongshan actually has many nicknames, such as Lingdao, Tongshan, Wudu, etc.

Dongshan. Dongshan is the name of the administrative region, and this name has been around for a long time. "Bamin Tongzhi" records: There is a mountain on the island, called "Dongshan" on the east side of the island (i.e. Sufeng Mountain). So Dongshan is named after Sufeng Mountain.

Lingdao. Because Sufeng Mountain is also called "Chuanling Mountain", Dongshan Mountain is also called "Lingdao". However, the title "Lingdao" is relatively rare. It is mostly seen in the inscriptions of calligraphy and paintings: xxx was written on Lingdao.

Copper Mountain. Because Dongshan’s name is unknown, not much is known about it. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when it came to Dongshan, many people probably didn’t recognize it. "Have you heard of Dongshan?" "Where is Dongshan? Never heard of it." "It's the place where Tongshan Institute is located." "Oh, it turns out to be Tongshan Institute. I know." Zhou Dexing arrived in the early years of the Ming Dynasty. Tongshan Institute was built in Dongshan. Tongshan Institute is equivalent to the current military management area and is much more famous than Dongshan, so some people later called "Dongshan" "Tongshan". In fact, when Dongshan County was established in 1916, it was originally planned to be named "Tongshan County". However, since there is also a Tongshan County in Jiangsu, the historical name of "Dongshan" was later adopted.

Five capitals. So why is it called "Five Capitals"? There is a town in Zhao'an called "Four Capitals". What is the connection between the two? It turns out that during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Zhao'an County was established. Part of Dongshan Tongshan belonged to Zhangpu, and the rest belonged to Zhao'an. The area under Zhao'an's jurisdiction was called the "Five Capitals".

2. The origin of the place name Dongshan

The place name of Dongshan is also very interesting. There are generally several naming methods.

1. Some are named after famous quotes. Such as Su Feng Mountain. Why is it called Su Feng Mountain? I used to be puzzled. It turned out that Zhou Dexing, the Marquis of Jiangxia, once climbed Sufeng. He felt that the scenery was very good and he was in a good mood, so he praised: "This mountain is worthy of Emei." In Zhou Dexing's view, Sufeng Mountain is not inferior to Emei Mountain. Mount Emei is the hometown of the great writer Su Dongpo, nicknamed "Su Feng". So the literati and poets called the highest mountain of Dongshan "Su Feng Mountain".

2. Some are named after historical stories. Like a eight-foot door. Bachimen is the gateway to Dongshan. In the past, you had to pass through Bachimen when entering or exiting the island. The name Bachimen puzzled me for a long time. "Men" means portal, which is easier to understand. So where does "eight feet" come from? Every time I pass by the Bachi Gate in a car, I always visually check where there are Bachi in the car. I can't seem to find anything related to "Bachi". After consulting relevant information and consulting local cultural researchers, there seem to be two versions, which are somewhat complicated. One is related to "Qi Jiguang". When Qi Jiguang fought against Japanese pirates, he entered the island through the ferry at Bachimen. Therefore, in order to commemorate Qi Jiguang's fight against Japanese pirates, it was called "Qi Bodu". Because everyone spoke in dialect, the common people did not understand its meaning, so it was passed down orally and became "Boqi Ferry". In the Hokkien language, the pronunciation is almost the same as "Bachi Ferry". It was the consciousness of "gateway" again, which later evolved into "eight-foot gate". The other one has to do with “border relocation”. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1664), in order to cut off the contact between the people of Dongshan Island and Zheng Chenggong, the Qing government implemented the "border relocation policy" and forced the Dongshan people to move into the interior and built an 8-foot-high boundary wall here. Dongshan people who were forced to move out looked at their hometown on this eight-foot boundary wall. To commemorate this experience, it was renamed "Bachimen".

3. Some are named after topography. Such as Ma'an Island. There are two hills on the island, shaped like saddles. Such as Tai Mo Shan, which looks like a hat.

4. Some are famous for their outstanding scenery. Take Wujiao Bay for example, because there is a large reef offshore of the bay, which is pitch black.

5. Some are named after the village where they are located. For example, Maluan Bay is called "Ma Luan Bay" because you are next to Maluan Village.

3. The origin of the name of Dongshan Village

Some village names are hard to understand, but if you look deeper, they are very interesting. There are generally several opinions.

1. Named after the prominent geographical location of the village. Dongshan is a hilly landform, with high and low heights. The concave ones are called "pits", the slightly protruding ones are called "pu", and the higher ones are called "mountains". Many place names are related to these geographical indications. There are so many pits, pits, pits, pits, mountains, and mountains.

Such as Kengbei, Xikeng, Kengnei, etc.; Xipu, Nanpu, Dongpu; Shanqian, Shanhou, Shandong, Shannan.

2. Two natural villages are merged, and one word from each is taken to form a composite. For example, Shuangdong Village has two natural villages, Shuangguoshan and Dongpi Village, which are combined from the "shuang" of Shuangguoshan and the "dong" of Dongpi. Donggu Village is a combination of the "dong" of winter and the "ancient" of Guleizhuang. Shipu Village is the name of two natural villages, Shitan and Pushang. etc.

3. Named after historical legend. For example, Maluan Village, Guanluwei, Tanshi Village, etc. These have historical legends in them, which may seem true or false. But the villagers recognized this legend and the origin of the village’s name. For example, the "Official Road End" has a more storyline. It is said that Emperor Bing, the last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty, was chased by Yuan soldiers and fled from here to the sea. The emperor ran away, but some civil and military officials were caught up by Yuan soldiers and chopped to death like watermelons. . So some people sighed: "It's so miserable to be an official." So they called it "the end of the official road". There is another theory that Emperor Bing of the Song Dynasty built a Tokyo city near Sufeng Mountain. Civil and military officials had to take an official road to reach Tokyo City, which probably went directly from Miaoshan to Tokyo City. When you reach the vicinity of Jinshi Village, you have reached the end of Guan Road, so it is called "the end of Guan Road".

4. Named because of the topography. For example, Qianma Village and Houma Village, because the surrounding terrain is shaped like a saddle, the front of the saddle is called Qianma Village and the back of the saddle is called Houma Village.

5. Named after special products. For example, Xiao Gualin in Zhangjiacun, because Xiao Gua is produced here. Ciyao Village was named Ciyao Village because there was a porcelain kiln in the village during the Southern Song Dynasty that produced porcelain. Because of the similar pronunciation, it was also called "Ciyao".

6. Use the village name of the ancestral land. Most of the residents of Dongchen Village moved from Dongchen Village, Zhao'an, and Gangkang Village moved from Gangkang Village, Zhao'an. Therefore, their ancestors directly used the original village name in order to remember their ancestral land.
