Source: "Zhuangzi's Inner Chapter: The Third Master of Health"
Original text: My life is limited, but so is my knowledge. With the limit, there is no limit, and it is almost already! It's almost enough for those who already know it! There is no near name for good, no near punishment for evil, and the governor thinks that you can protect yourself, you can live all your life, you can raise your relatives, and you can do it for years.
Interpretation: My life is also limited, but knowledge is also limited.
My life is also limited-my life refers to human life. 2 knowledge-knowledge.
The whole sentence means: human life is limited, but knowledge is infinite. If you pursue infinite knowledge with limited life, you will be exhausted. In this case, those who pursue knowledge will only be exhausted. People who keep in good health don't do good things to pursue fame, and they don't do bad things to violate the criminal law. If they follow the laws of nature as the law of doing things, they can protect their lives, preserve their nature, preserve their spirits and enjoy the whole world.
Understanding: From this sentence, we can see that Zhuangzi's thought is somewhat negative. He thinks that human life is limited and knowledge is infinite, so there is no need to pursue infinite knowledge with limited life. However, people nowadays often only see the first half of the sentence "My life is limited, but knowledge is also limited" and think that Zhuangzi means that human life is limited and knowledge is infinite. We should devote our limited life to infinite knowledge, which is a correct idea. It is never too old to learn, but we have misunderstood Zhuangzi's original intention.
