Ban Gu's explanation is: "If you leave, you will still suffer. As a speech, you will know your worries." It means that the word Li Sao was written by me when I realized that I was in constant sadness.

In ancient Chinese, the word "Li" and the word "suffering" were often used to talk about encounters. Ban Gu interprets Li Sao as "meeting sorrow".
