The king has an eldest daughter, named Pei Ying, who loves this phoenix very much. A few years later, the princess suddenly gave birth to a baby. The king thought it was strange, so he cut off the phoenix's head in anger and buried her in a hill in the forest. The princess was so sad that soon after, she gave birth to a baby girl.
