Yu Minhong was born in Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province in October 1962, and received primary and secondary education in Jiangyin City.

In 1980, Yu Minhong was admitted to the Spanish Department of Peking University, but fell ill and took a year off from school.

In 1985, Yu Minhong graduated from Peking University and stayed at the school.
