Alexander Alexander Van Degrift. General of the United States Marine Corps, born in Charlottesville, Virginia on March 1887. His father is a successful contractor. Vandegrift studied at the University of Virginia during 1905- 1908. When he was a child, he often listened to adults telling stories about the American war, and read many military historical novels during his study, so he admired the war heroes in the stories very much. But then dropped out of school and joined the United States Marine Corps. 1909, Vandegrift was promoted to second lieutenant.
