Reflect:
Tolstoy believes that since there is evil in everyone's heart, people can't seek their own peace by punishing and retaliating against others, and no one has this right. But resentment can't calm people's hearts, so another way to get peace can only be counterproductive, and that is "forgiveness." Once you forgive others, people can stand on a higher level and face all inequalities and injustices.
We also know that although in many cases, forgiveness can't make the perpetrators wake up, can't really eliminate evil, and may even let the perpetrators do whatever they want, at least, people who forgive others can bring more selfless love to the world and keep the understanding and friendship between people. On the other hand, once revenge begins, the perpetrators will not let go, but will even intensify their revenge. In the long run, all love will disappear, and then hell will come to everyone's heart, which is even more terrible.
