I read a story a few years ago and I was deeply impressed:
A man with average grades in the class A girl who is enthusiastic to help others, trustworthy, easy to get along with, optimistic and humorous, and has simple ideals, was unanimously elected as monitor by the whole class.
The teacher was surprised and said to the girl’s mother: Your daughter’s grades are average, but she is very good. The last time I met such a student was a hero who participated in the flood fighting and rescue work.
Mother joked to her daughter: You are better than a hero.
The daughter looked at her mother seriously and replied: There is a famous saying that when a hero passes by, someone should always applaud on the roadside. I don’t want to be a hero, I want to be someone who claps on the side of the road.
Girls are willing to applaud heroes, but they make themselves heroes.
This story reminds me of the principle of "sages follow others first".
Laozi uses the image of heaven and earth to tell us a truth: The reason why heaven and earth can last forever is because they are not selfish, benefit all things without asking for anything in return, and gain the awe and admiration of all things. The same is true for wise leaders. They put their own interests last, and ultimately gain the respect and love of everyone, and are promoted to higher positions.
1. In business, companies with vitality often have an altruistic mission.
Papa Ma’s mission in creating Taobao is to make it easy to do business in the world.
Peter Thiel founded PayPal with the mission of solving the payment problems of people in third world countries.
The mission of Fan Deng Reading is: to lead 300 million people across China to read together (reading lights up life).
...
These missions, based on altruism, are more likely to attract people with lofty ideals to gather together to jointly promote goals and ultimately achieve a win-win situation.
This is true even if you are just running a small store. If the boss provides high-quality products and services from the perspective of benefiting customers, is honest and sticks to his original intention, over time, everyone will trust this store and make money. It comes naturally.
2. Leaders and leaders who are loved by others put the interests of others first
Chairman Mao is the best representative, caring about the country and the people, and for the liberation of the people And struggle finally achieved his great cause.
"Be concerned about the world's worries first, and be happy after the world's happiness." This is true for all kinds of outstanding leaders and company leaders.
I once met a leader who gave priority to his subordinates when encountering problems and strived for various benefits for his subordinates. Therefore, his subordinates were very active in their work and had high initiative. The leader himself is also happy and relaxed, without having to worry about anything.
So, altruism can achieve a win-win situation; people who are not selfish can more easily achieve their own selfishness.
This is true of everything.
The reason why the prisoner's dilemma exists is because everyone wants to maximize their own interests and rush to betray each other for their own interests. In the end, no optimal result is obtained, and both sides suffer.
The key to breaking through the prisoner's dilemma is to put the other party's interests first. If both people do this, the plot will be reversed and become a win-win situation.
It can be seen that the prisoner's dilemma and win-win thinking are just different ideas.
One thought of heaven and one thought of hell. However, this "one thought" is difficult to change, so there are only a few saints after all.
Most of us may not become saints, but this does not prevent us from having an altruistic heart.
Our own interests are important, but as long as we put ourselves in someone else's shoes and consider the interests of others, we will not become selfish, and it may also bring us unexpected gains, such as gaining the other person's trust, long-term cooperation, etc.
Please remember: "The saint comes first after others", and it is good for others and ultimately for yourself!
