Fang Hung-chien was forced by family pressure to get engaged to a woman who was also Zhou. However, during his college years, Zhou Sheng became ill and died very early. Later, he went abroad to study.
During his study tour in Europe, Fang neglected his studies. In order to explain to his family, Fang bought a fictitious doctor's degree certificate from Clayton University before graduation and returned to China with international students. I met and fell in love with Miss Bao, a foreign student on the boat, but she cheated me. At the same time, I also met Sue, a college classmate who came back from studying abroad in the same boat.
After arriving in Shanghai, I worked in a bank run by Mr. Zhou, the father of my late fiancee. At this time, Fang won the favor of Su and fell in love with Su's cousin at first sight, so he spent all his time between Su and Tang, and met Zhao, who pursued Su enthusiastically, which led to some misunderstandings and love struggles between Zhao.
Fang finally ended his relationship with Sue and Tang. Sue married the poet Cao Yuanlang, but he knew Fang was not his rival in love, so he married Fang who admired each other. During this period, Fang Hung-chien gradually fell out with the Zhou family.
At the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War, Fang fled to Shanghai Concession. On Zhao's recommendation, Fang went to mainland universities to teach under Zhao, Gu Erqian and Li. Because of the weakness of Fang Hung-chien's personality, he fell into complicated interpersonal disputes. After being engaged to Sun Roujia, she left San Lv University and returned to Shanghai. With Zhao's help, Fang Hung-chien worked in a newspaper and married him.
After marriage, the contradiction between Fang Hung-chien and his wife Fang Jia and Sun Roujia menstruation was exposed and intensified. Fang Hung-chien resigned, quarreled with Sun Roujia, and gradually lost hope for life.

Creation background
Fortress Besieged is Qian Zhongshu's only novel (another novel, Heart of Lily, was lost before it was finished, and the author never wrote it again). It started at 1944 and ended at 1946, and was printed and distributed by Shanghai Chen Guang Publishing Company 1947. The book is Qian Zhongshu's Miser, and the novel is based on his familiar times, familiar places and familiar social classes. But the characters and plots that make up the story are fictional.
Although some characters have some real shadows, everything is fake; Some plots are slightly true, but the characters are all made up. The hero "Fang Hung-chien" is based on two relatives: one is ambitious but not knowledgeable, always complaining; An arrogant singer. Both of them have read Fortress Besieged, but neither of them thought of Fang Hung-chien because they have never experienced Fang Hung-chien's experience. "
