When it comes to "coach", I believe that this image will appear in many people's minds: a driving instructor when you first learn driving skills? Muscular fitness trainer at the gym? Or a demanding skills coach on the sports field? In fact, in addition to the coaches we are familiar with above, there is another type of coach.
Understand the profession of coaching
A coach is a neutral, selfless supporter and a professional "thinking partner". Accompanying and listening are his ways of working, inspiring and thinking are his basic skills, and treating others as success is his mission. He can be a helper on our life journey, allowing everyone to face the future with full energy.
The term coach was first translated from the English word Coach, which means carriage in English. The carriage cannot tell the person where to go, but the person involved (the coachee\coaching object) can tell the carriage where you are going, and the carriage can help you get there. In other words, the coach will not tell us where to go, but he can better help us find the direction and find more suitable answers.
In the past, coaching was the preserve of companies and executives. Now, coaching is applicable to all learning relationships. For example: teachers should be coaches, parents should be coaches, coach-style communication, coach-style leadership... Coaches can help them improve their personal performance and improve the quality of learning. I believe they are born with creativity and wisdom.
An unforgettable coaching course experience
In the summer vacation of 2021, during the Shanghai Match Charity Learning Activity, I was fortunate enough to meet seven professional coaches and experience the feeling of being with the coaches. , and also have a deeper understanding of the coaching profession.
At the beginning of the event, seven coaches told their own stories about their association with the coaching profession. Although their experiences were different, the original intention of their choice was the same - to heal themselves and give energy to others. , so that everyone can continue to meet better selves.
The professional explanations of the coaches deepened the understanding of this profession. As a coach, what do you do? You must learn to ask questions, the questions must be open-ended, and you must give the person being accompanied space to answer, allowing them to slowly open their hearts and talk about themselves; you must learn to listen, not only to listen to the stories told by others, but also to listen to the hidden meanings behind their words. , listen to their needs, desires and values; learn feedback, see their needs from listening, and help them find their own sticking points. The coach should be like a mirror, allowing them to see their blind spots and find the right direction through dialogue.
In the experience session, seven coaches walked into seven groups and reproduced the scene of dialogue between coaches and coachees. Coach Zhuang walked into our group and had a face-to-face communication with teacher Huanhuan in the group about the confusion about not being recognized for the open class. At the beginning, I always had the urge to interrupt Huanhuan when she was telling him, but Teacher Zhuang’s eyes were soft and he listened sincerely to every sentence of Huanhuan’s narration, recording key words in the language from time to time. I gradually calmed down and learned to listen.
When Huanhuan stopped, he started to ask: Is this quality class important to you? What are the standards for quality courses? Have you listened to your own class? What do you think? ...Every question will be given enough time for Huanhuan to fully talk about it, and emotional encouragement will be given at the right time.
Huanhuan burst into tears unknowingly, fully pouring out her grievances and dissatisfaction, and the confusion in her heart was also solved through self-examination time and time again: in daily work, , and constantly cultivate themselves by improving the artistry, language expression, affinity, etc. of teaching design.
It turns out that on the road of life, those close friends who have listened to our stories and given us help and nourishment seem to have played the role of coaches. Only with them can we have inner warmth and future. Motivation to act.
As teachers, have we sincerely listened to the voices of children? Have children ever opened their hearts to us? Have we provided them with companionship and support as coaches? I couldn't help but think... We should learn from the professional behavior of coaches and apply it to our own education and teaching. We must become coaching teachers to empower more children and help them grow!
? ? Thoughts on being a coaching teacher
During the public welfare study in Shanghai during the summer, I discovered a particularly common phenomenon: every coach and mentor has a lovely The nickname is kind, cute and warm. Once you read it once, you will remember it deeply in your mind. Some of these nicknames are in Chinese, such as Teacher Baobao, Teacher Xingxing, Teacher Huahua, Teacher Anna, etc.; there are also some nicknames in English. My English foundation is not good, but the only one I remember is particularly impressive, and that is Teacher Song Yunhua. name. In order to let everyone remember her English name better, she directly used the method we used when we were students when we first learned English-replacing it with Chinese homophonic sounds. She told everyone: "My English name is easy to remember, three drops of water, no water, pronunciation - three drops", which made us laugh out loud at that time. Unexpectedly, this trick is really effective.
With a nickname, you can call them by their first names, whether you are a student or a teacher, whether you are older or younger. The nickname can be blurted out without a surname, and there is no sense of strangeness. The people on stage and off stage immediately blend into one, and a sense of equality and intimacy instantly comes to mind. Especially for a group of teachers like us who come from rural areas, the nickname immediately eliminated the uneasiness caused by this strange city and strange environment. Calling everyone by their nickname, we are old friends reunited after a long absence. It turns out that nicknames have such unknown therapeutic effects.
I think: If you want to become a coaching teacher, you must first establish an equal and harmonious teacher-student relationship. As the new semester begins, we might as well give ourselves a cute nickname. This unique and unexpected move will win the students' "preference" for you immediately.
That little nickname may seem like an inconspicuous move, but every time you say it loudly, your children will love you more from the bottom of their hearts; if you say it at home, your children will love you more. He felt a sense of pride, "Look, my relationship with the teacher is on a first-name basis..." Behind this, what kind of power will grow in the children's hearts?
I once had a colleague, Teacher Li Dongmei, who was good at spoken English and had experience as a translator before taking up the position. The teaching style is unique and makes students call themselves by their English name - "Anna". During recess and after school, "Anna, baybay..." is heard one after another. In class, the children's eyes are full of excitement, their little hands are raised upright, and their little faces are red. At that time, I just thought that she loved the teaching profession and the children. Now that I think about it, she is actually on the road to becoming a coaching teacher.
The relationship between coaching teachers and students must be harmonious. They are no longer unattainable teachers for children. They are more trusted and close to students, and they can walk easily. Enter the inner world of students and listen to their real thoughts...
The best education is companionship, and the most beautiful enjoyment is spiritual communication. As teachers, if we always act in a condescending manner, the children's hearts will naturally not be open to you. What we need to give them is companionship and trust, so that they feel respected and recognized.
Children in primary school are young, lively and active, often unable to sit still, and always like to report to the teacher constantly. It seems that we spend more time every day solving " In the class affairs of trivial things. Sometimes, we inevitably feel irritable because of things in life; sometimes, there is unhappiness between children, which really can’t be slapped together; and sometimes, we are busy with school affairs... I don’t know when. , we have lost the patience and care we should have, we are less serious when listening to students' inner voices, and we are more arbitrary when solving problems, seemingly pursuing short, flat and quick ways to solve problems.
In life and study, we must give positive encouragement and affirmation to children's performance, and even give strong recognition. When children encounter difficulties or problems in doing things, we must help them find solutions. Find the root cause of the problem, guide the children to find solutions to the problem, and experience the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in solving the problem.
Whenever we want to "attack", we might as well listen to what the child says first. In the process of listening carefully and calmly, we may find something more useful than "blaming". For those students in the class who have a bad temper and love to "butt" them, they should not be "hard" or "hard". They should first use a kind attitude to let them truly express their thoughts and express their understanding, and then melt them down. After all the worries, anger and other emotions, let him examine himself, where did he go wrong in the face of the rules? According to the rules, what should I do? I believe that this will gradually be internalized into students' conscious behavior of constantly reflecting and making timely adjustments.
Similarly, we also believe that in the process of accompanying children to grow, we can also gain something, be inspired, and grow.
Many people think that appreciation is just about praising children, isn't it just saying "you are awesome"? In fact, this is too one-sided understanding. This kind of appreciation may make children before the age of three feel particularly excited and excited for a moment, and can ignite their passion for life and various things. But as he grows older, for children who have entered elementary school, he already has his own understanding of external things. If we use this kind of appreciation in general, it will inevitably make children feel that our appreciation has a little more "water" and a little less sincerity. These "appreciations" gradually no longer stir up any ripples deep in their hearts.
This requires teachers to have a pair of eyes that are good at discovery in life, discover the "sparkling points" of children and strengthen them in time, so that the children's advantages can be carried forward in your appreciation and praise.
Understand students’ personality characteristics. In life, it is not difficult for us to find that every child has his own personality and characteristics. It is precisely for this reason that they have become the only individuals in the world that cannot be copied.
Some children love to be clean, and their clothes are always neat and tidy every day; some children are enthusiastic and are particularly willing to help others; some children are not good at talking, but they have visible efforts; and some children may be keen on class management and encounter problems. Things love to show up... There is always a naughty, troublemaker, etc. in the class, which gives us a lot of headaches. This is also a real existence.
As the saying goes: "Five fingers are not even the same length when stretched out." We must continue to amplify and strengthen the advantages of each child after facing up to the personality differences among children. "What kind of world you see will determine what kind of heart you have", "What kind of encouragement and expectations you give your children will determine what kind of young man you will be in the future." This kind of targeted praise will make children more It is easy to understand and know what to do in the future, and your sincere affirmation can also encourage him to do better in the future.
See the children’s efforts. There is not much difference in the intelligence level of each child, but some people are better at this aspect, and some people are better at that aspect. These innate factors are beyond the control of children. Whether a person can develop well in the end depends on hard work. Therefore, we should appreciate children's efforts, not their intelligence.
Pay attention to your child’s progress. Teachers must be able to discover what makes the child better this time than last time, so as to stimulate the child's motivation and enthusiasm and strive to do better next time. Moreover, encourage children to strike while the iron is hot and praise them in a timely manner to prevent them from being disappointed because they do not receive timely encouragement, thus greatly weakening the effect of appreciation.
Appreciation brings us closer to our children; appreciation allows us to see the twinkling light in children’s eyes; appreciation fills children’s hearts with firm and upward strength!
"Asking a question is often more important than solving a problem", this is a familiar saying. Because solving a problem may be just a mathematical or experimental skill, but raising new questions requires creative imagination.
The coach never gives an answer, but open-ended questions can continue to make people think, so that people can look inward for answers. Timely inspiration and continuous questioning are effective tools for coaches to make people reflect.
As a teacher, our questions have a strong guiding role in the classroom. How to ask questions, when to ask questions, and the quantity and quality of questions will directly or indirectly affect the teaching effect. But in real life, many of our teachers are not good at or do not know how to ask questions.
Have we ever asked such questions? "Is it like this?" "Is it good?" "Is it right?" These questions allow students to blurt out without thinking. If this kind of questioning dominates the classroom, it will not only fail to activate students' interest in learning, but will also not lead students to think deeper.
We teachers must learn to ask questions at key points. Thinking begins with surprise and questions, and using questions to guide students' thinking can often stimulate students' learning motivation and promote the improvement of classroom efficiency. In classroom teaching, we must fully understand students' hobbies, create real situations, fully mobilize students' multiple senses, and participate in learning. If you ask questions at the right time when students have difficulties in learning, you can better help students think and lead their thinking to the depths.
Psychological research believes that when students encounter difficulties in learning, teachers do not directly give answers, but set questions to guide them to rely on their own efforts to overcome difficulties and seek answers. This will It greatly enhances their interest in learning and improves their confidence in learning. At the same time, it also enables them to form a belief that difficulties can be overcome.
We must pay attention to the quality of classroom questions. What matters in class is not how many questions we ask, but what is the quality of our questions? See if it asks key points, see if it asks just the right amount, see if it asks precise and unambiguous questions, see if it helps students think deeply. Does this happen in the classroom? After the teacher asks a question, the students look confused and at a loss what to do? In fact, this must be a problem with our questions, which requires us teachers to think from our own questions.
Being good at raising doubts and asking questions is the key for teachers to change their classroom teaching role and improve teaching efficiency. Learning to ask questions should become a required course for our teachers.
During the communication with the coach, the coach's words and deeds, optimistic attitude and thoughtful way of thinking will have an invisible and profound impact on the person being coached. Therefore, if we want to be coaching teachers, we must lead by example and strive to become the kind of person students want to be.
If you ask students to be honest, you can't lie; if you ask students to save food, you can't mess with leftovers; if you ask students to be civilized in words and deeds, you have to behave in an elegant manner...Teacher Only by consistent words and deeds and leading by example can we persuade, infect and edify students. As the saying goes, teaching by example is more important than words.
Chernilshevsky, a Chinese philosopher, once pointed out: "What teachers make their students into, they themselves should be such people." This fully proves that teachers’ charisma is the most powerful force in education.
Teachers must have dreams and pursuits. Only when a person has a dream can he pursue it tirelessly and have a steady stream of motivation. “The most beautiful scenery is on the road, and the infinite scenery is on the dangerous peaks.
"With dreams, one's life is on the road to the most beautiful scenery, tirelessly and without fatigue...
Teachers must have firm beliefs. Dare to believe in the power of belief, believe in giving With trust, companionship and expectation, children will surely grow up stronger.
Teacher Wu Shuai in the summer writing camp in Shanghai is an ordinary rural teacher in Zhumadian, Henan, but he loves education. He also loves to write, and his attempts and thoughts on education are often seen in newspapers and magazines, inspiring and thinking for countless front-line educators. Under his influence and leadership, students have also begun to write. The class he teaches is 40 years old. More than 10 students actually publish nearly 200 articles in various journals every year, with an average of 5 articles each! It’s really unimaginable. You know, writing articles is a daunting task for many children, but it is. Real existence!
Confucius once said: "If the person is upright, he will not act according to orders; if the person is not upright, he will not act according to orders. "Leading by example not only allows us to live the best in the children's minds, but also keeps seeing better versions of ourselves!
From the coaches, I continue to see better teachers.
May we all continue to learn and grow into coaching teachers, not only empowering ourselves, but also illuminating more children around us!
