I would like to express my feelings after reading this book in a more pleasant way. (The content is a bit long, I will try not to be verbose!)
The author of "Kill A Mockingbird" is the American Nelle Harper Lee (1926--2016). Similar to the author of "Gone with the Wind", he probably belongs to the type of writer who became famous through one piece of work (the type who became popular with this one work in his life).
"To Kill a Mockingbird" won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 (known as the "Nobel Prize of Journalism"), and the film of the same name adapted from the novel won three Oscars at the 25th Academy Awards. A major award (I don’t think I need to go into details about this).
This work is also a recommended extracurricular reading in American middle schools and the book with the highest borrowing rate in American libraries; this work is included in Obama’s publicly recommended book list for his daughter. (No need to talk nonsense, let’s read it together when you have a chance!)
The background of the story is the Great Depression of the United States (the 1930s), and the location is the American South (which was once the area hardest hit by black slaves in the United States) ) A quiet town-Maycomb.
SCOUT: A stubborn and disobedient little girl. To be honest, I always thought this was a boy in the first few pages. Unexpectedly, as I read on, I found out that this guy is actually a very manly girl - she gets into fights with people when she disagrees with her, and she thinks that her fists are a magic tool for solving problems.
JEM: The brother of the girl above. Together with my sister, I grew up from being naughty and mischievous to a thoughtful and insightful young gentleman. It's a pity that he was crippled by the bad guys in the end!
Atticus ATTICUS: The father of the above two characters. (At first, I always read him as Adidas, because of the advertising effect, I can’t help it!) He is a lawyer in this small town, widowed a few years ago, and single. He is gentle and gentle, a humble gentleman with high moral character and high respect.
CALPURNIA: The servant in the protagonist’s family, a black nanny. I love these two little guys so much. They work hard and take care of the housework. They are deeply loved by the three white employers.
DILL: The playmate of two little guys, who came to Maycomb to visit relatives for the winter and summer vacations, and made a "private life" with the little girl Scout.
TOM: A black man, wronged by white people, escaped from prison in despair and was killed, shot 17 times!
Arthur NATHAN: "Weird" Radley is actually a spirit Traumatized autistic people.
Bob BOB: A white villain, a ruffian. He instigated his daughter to wrongfully accuse Tom, causing Tom to receive an unfair trial and die tragically. Because Atticus exposed his true face, he became angry and killed Jem, causing Jem to be disabled!
Several storylines that impressed me deeply:
Main plot 1
Scout and Jem sometimes felt that their father Atticus was too temperamental. Okay, he's too gentle, and I even think he's a bit unmanly. Until one day, a mad dog appeared in the town, threatening the safety of the people in the town. The Sheriff, who has always been aggressive and aggressive, gave up when he and Atticus faced the mad dog in front of them, and had to ask Atticus to take action. Their father threw away his glasses, picked up his gun, and killed the mad dog with just one bullet. Only then did the two siblings learn that their father was actually a martial arts master, the legendary "Sweeping Monk"!
Main plot two
During the summer vacation, they met Dill who came to visit relatives. Three little guys formed a trio of troublemakers. They heard that there was a mysterious figure living in the neighbor Ladley's house. He never went out and almost no one had seen him. Various rumors painted him as a "weird". They tried their best to find out the truth, but failed.
But during the process, they discovered that gifts often appeared inexplicably in the hole of the big tree in front of Ledley's house, and even a pair of statues carved by the brother and sister using soap appeared. There are various signs that it seems that the person who gave them the gift is the "weirdo" in their eyes.
Main plot three
One day, the two brothers and sister learned from gossips in the town that the judge in the town had entrusted their father to defend a black man. It turned out that this black man named Tom was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus accepted the defense without any hesitation. This aroused the dissatisfaction of almost all white people in town. Because in the eyes of those white people, black people are lowly and shameless, and they should just click away without any need to defend themselves! Although Atticus agreed, he knew very well:
In court, facing the aggressive accuser Bob, Atticus calmly pointed out the key to this scam: the defendant Tom years ago He lost the use of his left hand due to a work accident, and all evidence shows that the injuries on his daughter's body were caused by a left-handed person. After peeling off the cocoon, he proved through strong evidence: Black Tom was wronged! It turned out that it was the white girl who was unwilling to be lonely and lied that she needed Tom's help with housework and took the initiative to seduce him. Tom knew very well that in that era, this was a crime of decapitation. When he couldn't avoid it, he was caught by the girl's father Bob! Bob found out that his daughter had done such a treacherous thing, and he beat her violently as a left-handed man. Tom took the opportunity to escape home. Unwilling to do so, Bob forced his daughter to join him in slandering Tom for rape, hoping that Tom would die.
Atticus relied on his superb debating skills to turn the tide. The truth of the whole matter also emerged. However, a jury of twelve (all white) still found Tom guilty. The villain, Bob, publicly humiliated Atticus as he left the courtroom, spitting in his face. But Atticus didn't make any resistance. He just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face before calmly leaving, leaving the villain Bob standing there staring.
Before the trial of the case was completed, Tom was already desperate and lost confidence in this confusing legal system. He tried to escape from prison and was shot to death 17 times. (Atticus and the others think: There is no need to fire so many shots!)
Main plot four
After Tom's death, life went on as usual, as if nothing had happened. But the villain Bob felt that Atticus had exposed his ugly face, which made him even more embarrassed (in fact, he was already a scum in everyone's eyes before!). He did not dare to face the "strong martial arts" person. How about Atticus, who chose to take revenge on his children. After the Halloween costume party, Jem takes his sister Scout home and meets the crazy Bob on the way. He wounds Scout (thanks to Scout's ham suit saving her) and knocks Jem to the ground. At a critical moment, a person they didn't know came to save the two brothers and sisters.
After returning home, Scout, who was still in shock, learned through conversations with the adults at home that the person who saved the two of them was the "weirdo" they had been trying to find out - the adults called him Ah. Se.
The Sheriff who hurried over found that the villain Bob was completely dead - he had been killed with a sharp kitchen knife. They all knew that the two young children could not kill the bastard. It was "weird" Arthur who accidentally killed Bob in order to save the two brothers and sisters.
The upright Atticus wants his thirteen-year-old son to bear the responsibility for the accident, because he knows that once someone knows that Arthur killed Bob, regardless of whether Arthur is guilty or not, he will He must step out of the home he has been hiding in and face the outside world. In that case, for an autistic person who has been hiding from the world for a long time, it is tantamount to killing him.
The kind-hearted Sheriff argued with Atticus and told Atticus that Bob had accidentally killed him. It was considered a life for a life and an explanation for Tom who died unjustly.
The title of this novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" comes from an American proverb: Killing a Mockingbird is a crime! There is such an explanation in the book :
To kill a mockingbird is a crime, but what about killing an innocent black man?
Tom was the innocent robin who was killed!
His death completely exposed the sharp racial discrimination and the incompetence of the judicial system in the United States. The Great Depression may have brought not only poverty to the United States, but also people becoming more ignorant because of poverty!
So are there other "Mockingbirds"? Think of that "weird" Arthur. Is he harmful to anyone? He was just living in his own world, but the ignorant white people in the town drowned the autistic man in the dark room with their spit. Their tongues are like sharp swords and their throats are like open graves, burying the conscience of this society.
The definition of sin should be: an act that causes great harm to others or society. In other words, the police will only come to you if you commit a crime. Racists, however, believe that killing a black man is no different than killing a mockingbird. Aren’t these racists committing crimes!
The definition of "sin" in the Bible is: deviation from the target. The so-called bullseye is the word of God. Therefore, they believe that disobeying God is a sin, which is too harsh! However, our society needs more people who stand up for justice. With humility and compassion, they fight for fairness and freedom in this society.
Atticus is such a fighter!
There are many times when we can't help ourselves, just like Atticus knew that he took over Tom's defense case. However, we need to teach our children just as Atticus taught his children:
When people are fearful, we must maintain justice and maintain a sense of awe-the kind of human respect for nature. Awe, the awe that those with rights have for those without rights, the awe that the strong have for the weak.
My fingers get a headache when I write it! Let’s end with Hemingway’s famous quote!
