Zeng Guofan (1811-1872), named Gongmou, Han nationality, was from Xiangyin, Hunan. He was a famous politician, strategist, calligrapher, educator, scientist and cultural figure in the late Qing Dynasty.

Zeng Guofan was smart and talented since he was a child. Later, he was admitted to Xiandao Academy in Fuzhou, Fujian. There, he loved learning, was diligent and studious, and often stayed up late reading. When he graduated from Xiandao Academy, he received the highest honor at that time - "Jinshi".

Zeng Guofan's political career began during the Daoguang period (1821-1850). This inspection made Zeng Guofan deeply aware of the people's suffering and poverty. He was determined to do something practical for the people, so he began a 40-year official career.

Zeng Guofan was proficient in military strategy. During the uprising of the "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom" warlord Li Xiucheng, he went through seventeen years of war before finally quelling this historic tragedy in which 15.5 million people died. He also suppressed the "Nian Army" uprising and eliminated the extremely vicious "Tiandihui" and other organizations. His outstanding achievements earned him the reputation of a national hero.
