I am no stranger to memorial archway, because it is one of the most distinctive buildings in China. Historically, the imperial court commended meritorious service, discipline, virtue, loyalty and filial piety in the form of memorial archways. Therefore, in a sense, the archway is a traditional landmark building in China. Having said that, apart from photos, I have never seen an ancient archway. Because in Nangong, there is only one memorial arch at the lintel of the martyrs cemetery in southern Hebei. As far as I know, there are no arches at present. Although I have been to some places, there are few guides to introduce me, so I pay little attention.

Listening to Yang Zhenying, director of the supervision office, saying that there is a chastity archway in Lincheng, I was moved and decided to see the elegant demeanor of the medieval archway in reality.

This chastity archway in Lincheng County is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, and the Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau named it "Pan Shi Chastity Square". This archway is located in Chengcun, southwest of Lincheng County. It is three squares and four columns, all carved from bluestone and well preserved.

Pan Shi, the owner of the archway Zhang Biao, is from Lincheng County. After she got engaged to Zhao Fu of Chengnan Village, Zhao Fu died of illness. Pan Shi never married again, kept her virginity and filial piety, and made a final farewell to her in-laws. This archway is world-famous. After the county announced that she was in power, Emperor Qianlong issued a decree to build a workshop for her in recognition of her chastity and filial piety, so this memorial archway came into being.

According to historians' research, the first chastity monument in China was not a chastity memorial archway but a "platform", which was called "Huaiqingtai". Located in Longshanzhai, Jiangnan Town, Changshou District, Chongqing. It was built by Qin Shihuang for Ba widow Qing, and it is recorded in Historical Records and Biography of Huo Zhi. "Ba widow Qing, her first Dan cave (cinnabar mine cave), and good at its benefits for generations, family background is not arrogant (incomparable, uncountable). Qing, a widow, can keep her job and defend herself with money from being invaded. Qin Shihuang thought that the Virgin Mary was a guest in order to build a clear platform for her daughter. " After that, there are countless similar things, and there are countless praises for virgins and women. Those who recommend by words go down in the annals of "Biography of Heroes among Women", and those who recommend by things are of course chastity archways.

In fact, in the history of China, the status of women is not as bad as we thought before, with the oppression of husbands and the bullying of in-laws. After all, history came from matriarchal society, especially in ancient times, women were free and played a leading role in the relationship between the two sexes. After the Qin and Han Dynasties, there began to be binding regulations on women's living habits, and the implementation was not strict. Otherwise, how could there be a secret between Qin Shihuang's mother, Zhao Ji, and Lv Buwei and Laoyi? How can there be a love story between Tang and Yang Guifei? According to experts' statistics, during the Han and Tang Dynasties, there were more than 20 remarried princesses, some married three times, and some even committed adultery. However, after the Song and Ming Dynasties, due to the encouragement and compulsion of national systems and policies, and the continuous strengthening of the concept of "hunger is small, shame is big" in Neo-Confucianism, the number of chastity women has greatly increased, and chastity has become a social moral norm, but also a shackle and shackle that binds women.

Therefore, in the face of this archway, some people lamented: How many daughters did an archway cost? At that time, people didn't understand the sufferings of a good wife and mother, but said that the emperor gave the Zhao family a big gift. Some people curse: every card downstairs, without exception, is the sadness and blood and tears of the murdered woman. Some people exclaimed: Up to now, it seems that they can still hear and see their unspeakable sadness and sadness.

In the face of this exquisite chastity archway, the historical relic of a woman who changed her hair into a bold head, an unknown soul who was sad or comfortable, and people's noisy discussion, I fell into a long meditation. ...

I am by no means a feudal defender who believes that "starvation is small and dishonor is big". I long for the happiness of my family and the warmth of human relations, and I don't agree with that kind of loyalty and filial piety. However, I never want to stigmatize Jielie and treat it so sadly, because I oppose the so-called glass of water theory of personality liberation, I hate easy virtue's courage, and I scoff at the so-called marriage with children that advocates premarital sex.

After all, society is pluralistic, and examining problems should be multidimensional. "Everything that exists is reasonable." From the point of view of historical materialism, we have to admit its normative role in the social atmosphere at that time. I don't think the disadvantage of traditional chastity culture is that its strict restraint on women has brought harm to women's body and mind. Don't female nuns in the history of Buddhism in China also live in a strict environment? What makes people criticize is its disregard and trampling on the principle of equality between men and women. Loyalty to marriage and love is common for both husband and wife, and should not be just a woman's cage and shackles. Scholars should respect themselves, and women should cherish themselves, that's all.

Pan Shi is looked up to and respected by people because she has made a perfect and harsh interpretation of honesty and trustworthiness with her life and has become an unattainable model. Because her parents or herself have an appointment with Zhao Fu, they will never marry again for life. Even if yin and yang are together, she will stick to the last moment until she falls down. How rejected and awe-inspiring.
