How to Understand the Landscape Discovery in Higuchi Traveler's The Origin of Modern Japanese Literature
Tang Gu wrote this book because many people tend to return to literature and "mind" after witnessing the failure of the radical movement in the 1960s. However, history played a joke on him. After the "modern literature" was unscrupulously deconstructed, what emerged was not the literature with internal tension and rich vitality that Natsume hoped, but the literature like Haruki Murakami became popular. Murakami is a typical figure who returned to literature and soul after the failure of radical movement in 1960s. In his creation, the tradition of "modern literature" has disappeared, and Watanabe-style characters are no longer national themes. They are detached from national politics and are willing to live on the edge of society. They carefully care for the prison-like self-subject. This kind of subject is pale and powerless, thinking that dancing is graceful, but it is actually a virtual shadow. After killing the powerful and rigid subject shaped by "modern literature", an even more unbearable clown appeared on the stage. This is a wonderful irony.
