This critical naturalistic novel exposes the corruption of the French government, the depravity of the bourgeoisie and the darkness of the press through Duroy's rising history. Duroy, the hero of the novel, is despicable and uses women to climb up; Moreover, due to Mo Bosang's hostility and prejudice against women, all the women in this book have fallen into the abyss of desire, easily lured and deceived by Duroy, and become tools of power and money, which is pitiful and pathetic. The tragic fate of four women around "Belami" Duroy also warns women: Only with independent personality and strong heart, unwilling to settle down, unwilling to persist, confident without losing dignity, can we reap beautiful love.
