Wang Mian, the owner of plum blossom, planted plum blossom and Yongmei. Painting plum blossom is the love of his life. In reality, when he was herding cattle, he often went to the temple to study and painted plums under the ever-burning lamp. Living in seclusion in Jiulishan, selling paintings for a living. However, in The Scholars, Wu portrays him as a figure who is good at drawing "lotus". Why is this?

? In the history of China literature, plum blossom and lotus flower are popular images created by writers. Plum blossoms are "mashed into mud and ground into dust, but the fragrance remains unchanged", while lotus flowers are "muddy but not dirty, clear but not demon, ripple but not demon". If you think about it carefully, it is not difficult to find it. In the history of poetry, plum blossom symbolizes the quality of fearlessness and perseverance, while lotus flower symbolizes purity and incorruptibility. The Scholars is intended to expose the efforts of Confucian scholars to pursue fame and fortune. Therefore, when portraying characters, writers tend to show the world Wang Mian's arrogance and indifference to fame and fortune. Lotus coincides with its theme in this respect.

? "Fame and fortune have no evidence. I have tried my best to make mistakes." Wealth and fame are both things outside the body, but when people see fame, they risk their lives to pursue it, and when they get it, it tastes like chewing wax. Wu begins by pointing out the world's pursuit of fame and fortune, and then leads it to Wang Mian in Yuan Dynasty, telling that although he lost his father at an early age and had a hard life, he gave up his fame, despised the powerful and was fearless. This seemingly unintentional opening design positioned Wang Mian as an ideal figure and made him a "mirror" of the villain.

Wang Mian worships Qu Yuan. When he saw the portrait of Qu Yuan painted in Chu Ci, he made a tall hat and a wide dress according to Qu Yuan's appearance. When the flowers bloom, it is bright and dark. He wears a high hat and a wide coat, holds a whip in his hand, sings in his mouth and plays in towns and lakes. Although he will be laughed at by people around him, he doesn't care. However, his imitation of Qu Yuan is not only superficial. He sold his Lotus Map to ordinary people around him, but he didn't want to sell it to the authorities and ordinary rich people at a high price. When the magistrate of a county invited the post, he avoided it many times. He said, "The magistrate of a county was completely annihilated, leaning on the potential and being dangerous. I wanted to be cruel here and do whatever the king wanted. Why should I be with him? " The vulgar rich man wanted to buy his painting, so he drew a big cow and put it on the door. The poem on the painting is very ironic. When the imperial court wanted to recruit Wang Mian to be an official, he cleaned up privately and lived in Kuaiji Mountain in seclusion. In troubled times, he didn't say his name, but kept his nature, just like a lotus, standing in a cesspit without a trace of vulgarity.
? In reality, Wang Mian is knowledgeable, ignoring fame and fortune and acting strangely. Wu's "take the essence and discard the dross" reduced his arrogance, highlighted his indifference to fame and fortune, and made him a model of a generation of Confucian scholars.
