The background of the Shenlong coup began in 660 AD. Her husband, Tang Gaozong, was in charge of government affairs and officially proclaimed himself emperor in 690. The Tang Dynasty changed its name to Zhou, and then on the eve of the Dragon Coup, Wu Zetian controlled or ruled China for nearly half a century. With the growth of age, succession to the throne became the biggest political focus at that time.
After the Shenlong coup in 699 AD, the Li family vowed that the issue of the successor of Wu Zhou seemed to be very clear, and Li also temporarily calmed down. Although the Wu family, who lost the right to inherit the throne, did not dare to openly challenge Wu Zetian's arrangement at that time, it was obvious that some political opponents who led Li Xian to the throne would obviously retaliate. For example, in 700 AD, Ji Chuan, the prime minister who persuaded Zhang Yizhi's brothers to support Li Xian, was framed and demoted.
One year before the Dragon Coup, Zhang Jianzhi became Prime Minister. Under the bad political situation that Wu Zetian sheltered the Zhang brothers, he took decisive measures and made joint contact, winning the support of Li and Wu. With the support of these political forces, he led the army to launch a coup, forcing Wu Zetian to abdicate and restoring Li Xian as the title of the Tang Dynasty. After being deprived of military power, he went home to support the elderly and died within two years.
