Five thousand years of Chinese civilization has always maintained its basic cultural values through a strong sense of shame. Boyi Shu was ashamed to eat Zhou Su, and Xiang Yu was ashamed to see his elders in Jiangdong. All this sonorous pride stems from the sense of shame in China culture. However, due to historical reasons, Chinese traditional virtues have been wrongly criticized, and gradually formed a kind of loss and prejudice against Chinese virtues in people's minds. With the reform and opening up, the impact of foreign culture on people's ideology has made people lose the root of their beliefs and become spiritually empty. Gradually, the traditional concept of honor and disgrace in China culture became blurred, and the moral balance in people's minds began to tilt. People have lost their way and confused right and wrong between loving and endangering the motherland, serving and deviating from the people, advocating science and ignorance, and industriousness and laziness. So some scholars shout loudly that the most serious value crisis in contemporary China society is the weakening of sense of shame and the collapse of bottom line ethics.

In such a social environment, Hu Jintao's demand for the establishment of a socialist concept of honor and disgrace represented by "eight honors and eight disgraces" has quickly aroused heated discussion in the whole society, and the new trend of building a socialist concept of honor and disgrace has become a common practice. Knowing shame and distinguishing between honor and disgrace, why should we be proud of it when there is no sense of shame?
