Rationalism is a philosophical method based on the theory that human reasoning can be used as a source of knowledge. It is generally believed that it came into being with Descartes' theory. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was mainly spread on the European continent, which embodied science and democracy in essence and was the philosophical basis of the Enlightenment.
