It should be "independent spirit, free thought"
The original text of the inscription is as follows: "Mr.'s writings may sometimes be incomplete. Mr.'s teachings may sometimes be debatable." But this independent spirit and free thought have lasted for thousands of years, and are as long as the heaven and the earth, and the three lights will last forever!"
The main idea is: Mr. Wang Guowei's academic writings may have some flaws. The place can be put out for everyone to evaluate. But his independent spirit and freedom of thought can inspire generations of scholars to pursue the truth and not be afraid of power.
In fact, this is also a portrayal of Mr. Chen's life. Since he proposed "independent spirit, free thought" in the 1920s, he has never violated this purpose throughout his life. The most obvious one was the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the early 1950s. It was decided to add two historical research institutes, send people south to Guangzhou, and invite Chen Yinke to serve as the director of the Second Historical Research Institute, also known as the Institute of Medieval History. Chen Yinke, who had been blind at the time, personally dictated a reply letter, which said:
"I think the most important thing in academic research is to have free will and independent spirit. ... Independent spirit and free will are a must. We must fight to the death. ...I am by no means opposed to the current regime. I read the original text of "Das Kapital" in Switzerland during the reign of Emperor Xuan Tong, but I believe that I cannot study Marxism-Leninism first. The people you want to invite and the disciples you want to take must have free thinking and independent spirit. If you don't do this, you are not my student..."
We know that the ideological tyranny of the dark decade is more severe than any historical period. More severe and cruel, it "forces people to speak, it monitors the most private parts of people's thoughts, it forces people to lie against their conscience, and it deprives people of their right to have a last resort."
