Influenced by his father's thought of "saving the country by science", Xie Yujin accepted the old adage that "if you are not a good doctor, you are a good doctor" and decided to study medicine. Soon, his brother and sister-in-law died of tuberculosis, and his sister was also infected with tuberculosis. At that time, there was no specific medicine, and the treatment of traditional Chinese and western medicine was ineffective. These events strengthened his determination to study medicine and the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, which threatened the health and lives of millions of people.
1932 was admitted to Tongji university medical college, and realized his original wish of becoming a doctor. He studied hard, got excellent grades and outstanding organizational skills, and was soon elected as one of the leaders of the Student Union of Tongji University Medical College. He took part in a petition to Nanjing, demanding that the Nanjing National Government recover the lost land in Northeast China, and presided over a rich anatomy exhibition, which caused a sensation in the Shanghai medical community. 1936, graduated from early medical school with excellent results.
1937 65438+ 10, he and several classmates crossed the ocean and went to the medical school of Freiburg University in Germany at their own expense. Because he is diligent and studious, he often does experiments in the laboratory after school, and his academic performance has always been among the best. After the July 7th Incident, his parents were forced to flee and their financial resources were cut off. But he has withstood the severe test of study and life. He was praised by his tutor, Dr. ullman, and won a scholarship from Humboldt Foundation. I finished my doctoral thesis at the age of 26. At the thesis defense meeting, five examiners took turns asking questions. No matter how difficult the test is, Xie Yujin can answer it and the paper passed.
After graduation, Xie Yujin took over from his tutor, Dr. ullman, as the acting director of the bacterial serum room in the internal medicine hospital of the University of Voorburg. In just over two years, he published five valuable scientific papers in the famous German journal Immunological Research and Experimental Therapy. In order to gain more knowledge during his stay in Germany, he studied salmonella serology, rabies prevention, tuberculosis immunity and so on. Berlin National Institute of Infectious Diseases and Marburg Beilin Institute named after Koch. Subsequently, he was hired as the head of the Department of Bacterial Serology in the Internal Medicine Hospital of the German University in Prague. In addition to finishing his daily work, he is still immersed in experimental research.
1941may, the german embassy in China sent a telegram from the health department of Chongqing national government, inviting him to return to China to participate in the epidemic prevention work in the anti-Japanese rear. He resolutely gave up the superior scientific research and living conditions abroad and returned to the motherland to serve as the technical director of the Northwest Epidemic Prevention Department of the Ministry of Health in Lanzhou. Here, he married a Suzhou girl, Jiang Nengxia, and spent his life together. After that, Jiang Nengxia became his right-hand man in his decades-long scientific career. 1942 to 12, left Lanzhou and returned to his alma mater, Tongji University Medical College, and then moved to Yibin, Sichuan. He is only 29 years old this year. Two years later, he obtained a professor certificate approved by the Ministry of Education. Subsequently, Xie Yujin was transferred to Shanghai Medical College as a professor of bacteriology. He contributed to improving the teaching level of microbial immunology in these two medical colleges.
In the third year after War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, 35-year-old Xie Yujin was hired as Dean of Tongji University Medical College (moved back to Shanghai) and Director of Institute of Immunology. At that time, due to the influence of years of war, the quality of medical education decreased obviously. He broke through the prejudice of Tongji University Medical College and personally hired professors from so-called British, American, German and Japanese schools to teach at the school. In teaching, he paid attention to the practice of basic medical courses, supplemented some teaching equipment under extremely difficult circumstances, and tried his best to improve the teaching level.
While devoting himself to teaching, in 1948, he and Guo Jinyuan, an alumnus who taught surgery and professor of internal medicine, presided over the establishment of a well-known national magazine "Popular Medicine", served as the first editor, and personally wrote a large number of popular science articles.
In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xie Yujin established the People's Livelihood Experimental Treatment Research Institute, and produced more than a dozen biological products such as toxoid, antitoxin, vaccine and diagnostic reagent for epidemic prevention in a short time. At that time, the task of infectious disease prevention and control in China was very arduous, and even a big city like Shanghai did not form a complete epidemic prevention system. Under very difficult conditions, Xie Yujin personally took the lead in sampling the tap water in various areas of Shanghai to check its pollution level, and at the same time, he also checked the bacteria carrying status of three cold drinks, namely popsicles, soda and orange juice, which made contributions to strengthening the health and epidemic prevention work in Shanghai.
1952, the Ministry of Health of the Central South Military and Political Commission hired him to Wuhan as the chief technician of the Central South Biological Products Research Laboratory (later renamed Wuhan Institute of Biological Products of the Ministry of Health), which was then known as the largest in East Asia. Since then, Xie Yujin has realized his long-cherished dream for many years. He devoted himself to his work, directed production, conducted scientific research with all his strength, and carefully trained professionals, so that the newly-built Institute of Biological Products quickly got on the right track, made one contribution after another to the development of biological products and immunology in China, and published more than 100 valuable academic papers.
